The thesis of the book and of the talks is that contrary to the narrative to be found in mainstream media and academia, modern science proves the truth of Christian theism as set forth in the Bible. Mr. Metaxas, who likes to sneer at academic elites despite being a Yale alumnus, says that the initial impetus for writing the book came when he met Dr. Steven Collins, an archaeologist affiliated with Trinity Southwest University, who is a Young Earth Creationist and who according to Mr. Metaxas has actually and unequivocally found the biblical city of Sodom. Mr. Metaxas then tends to wonder aloud why the New York Times and other similar media sources haven’t reported on this monumentally important find, which clearly demonstrates the historicity of Genesis. What Mr. Metaxas tends to fail to mention in his talks is that Trinity Southwest University is an unaccredited school located in a storefront in a strip mall in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also omits that Dr. Collins, who is the Executive Dean of the school, has two PhDs on his resume, one from Trinity Theological Seminary, also an unaccredited institution, located in Evansville, Indiana, which offers “100% Online Degrees,” and another from Trinity Southwest University, the school of which he has been the head since it’s present iteration in 1990. As an aside, legitimate scientists tend not to collect degrees from unaccredited institutions. The archaeological site in question is Tall-el-Hammam in Jordan, near the mouth of the Jordan River at the north end of the Dead Sea. It has in fact been examined by archaeologists for nearly a century, so there’s no particular mystery about the place. And it was extensively examined by a team from the British Museum in 1975-76. Since 2005 there has been a dig supervised by Dr. Collins at the site. A September 2021 article in Nature details how a Bronze Age city, one the many layers in the site, was destroyed by what they believe was an airburst caused by a meteor in approximately 1660 BCE, a date which is problematic for Young Earth Creationists, who place the destruction of Sodom several hundred years earlier. Despite Mr. Metaxas’s certainty of the validity of Dr. Collins claim to have discovered the real biblical Sodom, in the September 24, 2021, edition of Christianity Today it was reported that “a number of archaeologists with varying degrees of familiarity with the Tall-el-Hammam excavation were highly skeptical. As Christianity Today reported seven years ago, few archaeologists outside of those working on the excavation team believe that Tall-el-Hammam is Sodom.” To reiterate, Dr. Collins’ claim is widely rejected by the professional archaeological community as well as biblical historians. I gather that both groups tend to think that Sodom and Gomorrah, if they existed at all, were located in the southern half of the Dead Sea region. Nonetheless, as to whether Dr. Collins has satisfactorily demonstrated that Tall-el-Hammam is biblical Sodom, Mr. Metaxas says that, “there is zero question whether he [Dr. Collins] proved it. He proved it.” This is about the standard of Mr. Metaxas' discourse on his broader thesis, which takes in the Fine-tuning Argument, abiogenesis and so forth. Tripe. Is there any wonder why the New York Times and similar publications haven’t jumped on Dr. Collins’ discovery?>> <<@romitsu968 says : Lord Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: No one comes to the Father, except through Him.>> <<@user-qi6tp1te1y says : There's over 500 million atheist in the world and most of them are in China because of the none religion policy>> <<@teamtundra2619 says : No atheism is growing in the us (mostly because of people like you)>> <<@Wishwater2 says : God is awesome!! That's the unfounded, ungrounded assumption that if any scientific discoveries emerge that can be construed as circumstantial evidence for _a god,_ it must be for God and not any of the many other creator gods. A giant leap of faith. These apologists arrogantly assume that the theism/atheism debate is: "Does God exist?" And atheist chumps play right along. All it takes for anyone to see this theocentrism in action is to listen to how they use the gee-word. Weirdly, the name "God" and the general term "god" are pronounced the same, allowing apologists like these to get away with philosophical murder. They will post videos ostensibly criticizing atheism or atheists but then go on to blather and bloviate about the problems, perils and pitfalls of not accepting "God"! The Xian god. Their god. Imagine how those of other faiths feel hearing that. If the apologists' problem is with not accepting God, then their beef isn't just with atheists but _all non-Xians!_ Mostly Muslims and Hindus but many others. They have their own gods, none of whom is God. They reject God just like atheists do. Atheists are outnumbered internationally at least 5-to-1 by religious theists who don't accept God. So, if the apologists' problem is with God-rejection, why do they pick on atheists so much? Shouldn't they spread their criticisms more...ecumenically? It's because to disparage, denigrate, defame, deride, demean - and sometimes literally demonize - those of other religions like they do those of no religion would bring accusations of extra-religious intolerance. But atheists are somehow fair game. See the hate? Imagine how these clowns would feel watching a theism/atheism debate from India that asks: "Is Brahma the Creator of all and Vishnu the Sustainer of all or is atheism correct?" That's Hindu theocentrism. Before any Xian apologists call "false dichotomy" on that, they should look in the mirror. But if it's atheism qua atheism they're against, then they'd be happy to see all atheists ditch their atheism and become devotees of the Hawaiian shark god, Kamohoali'i, right? Or any god not God, right? No more atheism! Y...ay? Of course, they could make a very easy little change to their delivery to show that it's atheists they're criticizing - sometimes justifiably - and not the billions of religious theists who also reject God: when describing or channeling atheists or atheism, always use the lower-case "g" and _pluralize!_ Say it with me: "gods" Or say "a god" or "any gods." Atheists lose the big picture too. But what would -atheists- the minority of atheists who are disbelievers and deniers and also outspoken say if God were disproved tomorrow? "One down, 2,499 to go! Let's take on Shiva next"? Atheism, whether nonbelief, disbelief or denial, is a position about _gods._ Theists and atheists alike reject God. Only atheists reject gods. But will apologists ever make this tiny update to their anti-atheist rants or else admit that they're really against all non-Xians? Ha! As IF! That would wreck their spiels. Tune your ear to how apologists use the gee-word and much of their blather falls apart.>> <<@tTtt-ho3tq says : My concern is if you believe in God of Abraham you can't accept the science of the universe is 14 billion years old? Or any other scientific discoveries like the Earth is round. It spins on its own and goes around the sun. If you believe in God of Abraham you also can't accept those either? Several years ago, there's one prominent Islamic cleric claimed the earth is not spinning and not going around the sun according to the Quran. And he can read the Quran in the original ancient Arabic, too. You have to deny all those generally accepted science around the world? There was Black Death right after the Christians lost the Holy Land. Many people believed it's a punishment from God. But we know better that the black death is a bubonic plague. We know we can treat them with antibiotics. So is leprosy. So are many other diseases that we thought curses by witches or voodoo or something. We once thought rats born out of dirty clothes. Science discovered viruses, bacteria, etc. Once ancient people believed in Zeus that was a god of thunders and lightnings. Ancient superstitious people believed thunders and lightnings were supernatural, and caused by Zeus, the god of the sky. But we know now it all part of the entropy of nature. The laws of thermodynamics that entropy goes from order to disorder. Electric energy in the sky is mixing up, entropy. And sometimes it jumps from the sky to the ground. It's the same natural phenomenon as we get shocked with static electricity when we touch a door nob or something metal. It happens by the order of nature that God designed. The same as rain, snow, winds, storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. Thermal energy in the sky is mixing up, entropy of the laws of thermodynamics. It's just mother earth. We humans are insignificant compared to mother nature. Some hurricanes are few hundreds miles wide! Wind speeds go up to over 100 mph! But it's natural. All governed by the physical laws of nature that designed and fine tuned by God. So where do we draw the line? The earth is not spinning? Yet there is nothing... I also keep track of major discoveries within the scientific community and yet none of this is mentioned there either. So apparently science has proven God without the scientific community knowing about it... That or the scientific confirmation of the existence of God isn't really that newsworthy. I wonder what this could mean...>> <<@Max_Doubt says : How many gods have arisen in the past and now reside in the graveyard of gods? Hundreds! And all inveterate hiders just like today's gods! Is that just a coincidence? Did they all make a mutual concealment pact? I doubt it. And how many physical phenomena have been attributed to gods only to be found to have better, natural explanations? Scores i.e. the Earth, sun, moon, planets and stars; earthquakes; the sky; the rain; the day/night cycle; eclipses; oceans and rivers; droughts; comets; volcanoes; fire; plants and animals; the aurora; the seasons; the wind; meteorites; glowing seas and many others. When has a workable natural explanation ceded to a supernatural one? Never! This justifies the belief that, whatever caused the Big Bang and Biogenesis, gods had nothing to do with it. Also, no "holy" book shows any knowledge advanced beyond the socio-historical milieu of the authors. Plus, all gods show clear signs of human creation, from the god/goat hybrid Pan to the god/elephant hybrid Ganesha to the god/ape hybrid Jesus and the "male" god Yahweh. Disbelief justified! Sure, some scientific discoveries can be interpreted as pointing to a god (not God). But what about others? The sciences of Egyptology and Palestinian archeology have reached a consensus: there was no Exodus, no Wanderings and no Conquest. That's all myth. That's why Xians can't say when the Exodus happened or who "Pharaoh" was. Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, Esau, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua have all been relegated to myth, along with most of the other pre-davidic Jews and Israelites in the bible. It's fiction. You would think that Xians would embrace the discovery that their god never did order any Joshua to carry out a campaign of genocidal annihilation across Canaan. But to admit that it's myth would blunt the bible for use as a weapon in their program of ideological domination. So they deny the sciences. And, by the way, genetics and biochemistry have confirmed beyond any reasonable doubt: all life is related through descent. So goodbye Adam, Eve, Eden and a "Fall from Grace." So Xians will have to conjure another reason Jesus had to die a bloody and torturous death because some "Original Sin" ain't it!>> <<@jordanmeyers2353 says : Atheism is a religion in many ways. They have a... Creed No God, anti-God, pro-homosexuality, anti-Christianity. Atheism is a belief.  I know that many atheists will disagree with this, but the atheists gathered around a common belief of no God, or lack of God, and the need to increase what they perceive as separation of church and state in America. Crisis Created a problem and offered a solution.  The problem was religious oppression in society with atheistic ideals as the solution. Assemblies Gathered in groups with meeting times.  Atheists don’t meet nearly as frequently as Christians do in their churches, but they do have state meetings, national meetings, and regular gatherings. Pulpit The lectern from which speeches were made, their ideas were promoted, and their reasons for their belief system were validated. Evangelistic The atheists sought converts to their cause.  They frequently spoke about getting the idea of atheism out into society and to move people away from theism. Celebration over converts Rejoiced when converts to their belief system were announced.  There was applause and excitement when there were announcements about people who had “come out of the closet” and announced their atheism. Zealous for their cause They wanted their cause and belief system expanded to the extent of changing America to reflect their thinking. Exclusive Only they have the truth.  The atheists repeatedly spoke of how atheism was the truth, and that theists and deists were ignorant of facts and reason.>> <<@Max_Doubt says : Xians are hypocrites. Without such hypocrisy, Xianity would shrivel up and blow away. To see this, just -invite- -challenge- _DARE_ any brainwashed Xian to back up their "god is good" baloney with a list of acts they believe their god would never do to anyone. That's right: a few examples of _purely hypothetical_ acts which cause so much pain, suffering, misery and grief that, although their "evil Satan" might perpetrate such acts against people, their "good" god _never_ would. Watch closely as the walls between their compartmentalized beliefs disintegrate, bringing their hypocritical notions into stark juxtaposition, causing their mouths to snap shut in a precious display of cognitive dissonance. If they _can_ make a list then Man _can_ judge God. They just did. That allows anyone to note all the biblical slavery, torture and carnage by God's hand and command and _righteously_ judge God (and Jesus via trinitarianism) to be a malicious, malevolent, murderous, sadistic monster. But failure to give any examples shows that they believe their god might do anything to anyone, any time for any reason. News flash: THAT'S NOT GOOD!!! No list also shows that they can't tell their god and devil apart _by their actions._ Of course, no list will be forthcoming. Admitting that their god can be judged negatively is just too taboo for brainwashed Xians. So remember: when Xians say "God is good," what they really mean is: "God is good but it's a 'special kind' of goodness which can't be told apart from pure evil." Flew might have become a nominal cultural Christian, but not a confessional Christian, though I have to double-check to be sure. Sarte already revealed the inconstincies in the atheistic worldview while being an atheist when he stated that "if god does not exist, we find no values or commands to turn to which legitimize our conduct". Sarte did NOT adopt theism because of emotional reasons. This is a blatant straw-man and misrepresentation.
