Honestly broadheads that only open when they enter the body would be ideal. If someone is wearing Kevlar a field tip can pierce it and then it opens inside their body. Should net more trauma than opening on the Kevlar I’d think.

I just watched a random video of the deadliest modern compact crossbows, every single one was using cocking and magazine innovations from Joerg. This dude seriously went from a passionate weirdo on the internet to revolutionizing an entire sub-set of weaponry. I love this man.

You need to use some other to fixate blades until they hit. Friction in quite unreliable and only works with high repeatability of parts. You may try to embed tiny magnet or use hair thin wire or rubber band to hold blades reliably

Ciao Joerg, cool product. You are on the path of surpassing firearms. Does the blade retract back in when you pull it out? Can you show that? Can you show what happens to the arrow if you miss the gel and hit the mat, or a wall? Can you pul them out and reuse them?

The wider cutting diameter and the more favorable flight characteristics of the mechanical broadhead is indeed a game changer. I switched to mechanical broadheads a few years back for hunting, and the efficiency jump in lethality is dramatic. Although mine use a rubber O ring to hold the blades in place during flight and yours seem to be using nothing but tension. I'd like to see longer range shots to find out if they deploy during flight or stay in place until impact.

A realistic self defense scenario is not 15+ meters. Most homes have hallways less than 8 meters, and rooms less than 6 meters. In my own scenario, the likely distance is less than 4 meters. Nonetheless I set up my Adder at 6 meters, and tested a mechanical broadhead (been using these for over a year now) on a pork shoulder. It went completely through, roughly 13 centimeters, and lodged itself in the backing target - while providing over an inch of cutting diameter.

In support of other comments in the comment section, these tests should be done at more realistic ranges. If this is to display the heads opening to show us their features, fair enough, but a 10-20m test would satisfy most of us. If it's not too much of a problem, could you redo the tests at 10-20m. We'd highly appreciate it. Keep up the good work!

I wonder about a tip that mechanically retracts on impact that releases blades on the sides maybe a couple of centimeters down the shaft from the tip. Maybe that would help with stabilizing flight.

I used them when they first came out on my cross bow I lost 4 deer that year. Cross bows bolts don’t spin so when they go in and out they leave slits that the deer can stop the bleeding so I went back to muzzys and haven’t lost a deer since.

Very interesting video, thanks Joerg. I would have liked to see a comparison of the first inch or so of the wound cavity, and the cuts in the simulated skin and clothing layers, to make sure that the broadheads were not expanding prematurely due to the acceleration of the bolt. I would have liked to see a comparison of the ease of extraction of the mechanical broadheads and the standard broadhead, as I assume it's possible for the mechanical broadhead to collapse when pulled out of the medium, and offer reduced resistance due to the significant difference in the cross-section of the collapsed broadhead and the wound channel it created while expanded. A simulation of a mechanical broadhead passing through brush or leaves would be interesting. Would impacting a leaf on the way to a target be enough to expand the broadhead prematurely, and cause instability in flight? Interesting to think about.
