It’s a trade off on the extra step. Rinse large particles off by hand before putting in the dishwasher, or put them straight in with food still on them and clean the filter more frequently. There is no true “self-cleaning” ability. Either the particle is small enough to go through the filter, or it isn’t. No more Wet dog smells in your glasses of water. Gee. If there are kids in the house, that's not a great idea. But if you have a hot wash setting on your dishwasher, or you can set the water heater temp fairly high, the result will be truly spotless, nearly sterile dishes.
