But it must be noted that bending of photons ( 'light' ) can also be understood in a completely different way, without the need for fantasies about spooky (plane) waves :: When a single photon travels through a medium such as glass, it interacts with its atoms and molecules without being absorbed. The photon's propagation is influenced by the dynamics of vacuum fluctuations !!! inside an atom or molecule, rather than by the atom's electrons. Imagine the photon taking a tiny zigzag path through an atom or molecule, which reduces its average momentum. Consequently, the photon moves more slowly relative to a reference frame in which the center of mass of the medium is considered at rest. During this interaction, the photon's momentum is slightly smaller than in a vacuum; however, its energy and average direction of propagation remain unaffected. Therefore, a non-zero mass (M > 0) can be assigned to the photon during this phase. Once the photon leaves the interaction region of an atom or molecule, vacuum fluctuations impart momentum until E/c = P is satisfied. At this point, the mass M returns to zero, especially when the photon exits the medium and propagates in a vacuum at speed c.

When I was a child I asked teachers about this but couldn't get the convincing answer. When I became a teacher I tried every source to get the correct answer. The explanation I gave to my students was not as concrete as your explanation but very close to it. Atleast my student would say our teacher explained it approximately correct

I've been having fun experimenting with gentian Violet soap bubbles. With the sun behind a large bubble one can see 2 images reflecting back, one of them being inverted. Whats interesting is the projection of a third image, all the while the bubble remains translucent and the entire background is perfectly visible. When the bubble floats off a perfect reflection from your perspective is clearly visible even from a distance.

I've never noticed that the colors were inverted on the 2nd rainbow! I've seen them probably 100 times and never noticed. I have seen 3rd rainbows a few times, but super faint.

This might be one of your best videos to introduce people to science. Everyone has seen a rainbow. Everyone has played with a magnifying glass or a prism or seen someone do it. The concepts aren't too hard to grasp yet it touches on quantum mechanics, geometry and electromagnetism. It's "the" video I use when I want to introduce friend or family to this channel.
