I've never noticed that the colors were inverted on the 2nd rainbow! I've seen them probably 100 times and never noticed. I have seen 3rd rainbows a few times, but super faint.

This might be one of your best videos to introduce people to science. Everyone has seen a rainbow. Everyone has played with a magnifying glass or a prism or seen someone do it. The concepts aren't too hard to grasp yet it touches on quantum mechanics, geometry and electromagnetism. It's "the" video I use when I want to introduce friend or family to this channel.

why does the light bend down even more when exiting the sphere? the less dense air allows "faster" light right? wouldn't this reduce the angle? (talking about the light beam in the diagram that continues to the right - not that caustic). rad video - a petite masterpiece.

I guess it's true that we don't see rainbows while looking toward the sun but we see solar halos periodically and they are pretty cool too. The colors are not as vibrant but they are captivating to see nonetheless.

As usual a wonderful video, with such a clear explanation. I watched the 3B1B video on refracton a while ago, which is a bit technicial, so this really added to that explanation. I just knew that rainbows were due to refraction, but never knew it is refraction plus reflection. Your explanation was full and thorough, without being too technicial. Also nice to see what are probably the 2 best channels on Youtube for using graphics and explaining maths & science working together.

So Iβm guessing that for larger/wider angle ones w a more complete arc (closer to a circle) that those r caused by droplets over a larger area/or altitude where either a cloud or fog etc is able to first bend the more concentrated light at a different angle, which is then refracted back at the viewer across a greater distance? Or is it only that the change in altitude and composition is enough to alter the angle of approach? Even then, Iβd b curious if the distance and size of drops could b what causes rainbows of fewer colors (when I think about seeing those theyβre mostly red) because the refracted light has already dispersed so far from the vector, or even that if the composition of the air as a medium to get to the viewer is just right such that it interferes w/shifts the phase of already refracted light to slow it down to weaker/red wavelengths?

One thing not mentioned: in the transmitted light you can also see a multicolored caustic. It's clearly visible in the part where you burn you finger LOL.
