There are more efficient ways to heat up the rail ends and also to melt steel insitu without using SRB Rocket Fuel. So, we are using Rocket Fuel to join rails and the myth about rail deformation because of temperature effects is nullified by the fact that the rail is constrained in the lateral direction and thermal deformation caused internal stresses to rise but no apparent rail elongation or contraction. Maybe you can use brittle coat or strain gauges on a piece of rail and measure the elongation and contraction due to temperature changes with and without rail constrainment methods.
