I don't recall having seen anywhere historical retro-debunkings of old ideas that had some hype and never really went nowhere. It may be partly some kind of survivor/memory bias, but it seems that there was less hype over nonsense back then, things would be put on the market and compete for real, some eventually winning for one reason or another -- not necessarily technological superiority, having the lead on the market doesn't depend entirely on that and can have the effect of delaying technological progress that's already inherently achievable, existing technology that's superior but largely neglected, like better audio formats over mp3, or better image formats for web versus jpegs or even gifs. Maybe the closest thing to perhaps some hype I recall was the envisioned return of airships, with futuristic designs and whatnot. I believe also there were some speculations about something like giant cruise hovercrafts for tourism at least. I have no idea to what degree those maybe-hypes involved ludicrous technological elements, or just didn't make much sense market-wise. A huge cruise-hovercraft seems to demand quite a bit more of fuel, that's the only thing I can come up with.
