Only soccer moms are concerned with these types of depiction of powers in media; magic is NOT real, especially in fantasy. What, because a character can fly or throw a hadouken doesn't mean they are drawing on satanic powers to do so – or that we can do the same – each fiction has its own in-universe law and explanation for its "magic". Magic in the real world is a form of made-up ritual for a person to feel in control of their lives; it doesn't have any real effect other than placebo on the user's head, or nocebo on a suggestionable receptor. Here where I live we have many sects of voodoo (among other things) each of them thinking they have the power to do a certain harm or good to individuals, and each using their own distinct ritual and explanation. It is forbidden in the Bible because it confuses the user, making them think they can control their fate, or the elements; in a way making them feel they can save themselves and be God. If you cannot enjoy a movie or a book for what it is without having it overlap with real-world convictions and ideas, you just make the rest of us Christians look bad.

If you're against Cross Examined using movies as a springboard to evangelize the Gospel, you would also have to be against Paul using a pagan altar as springboard to evangelize the Gospel on Mars Hill. Speaking at the Areopagus, he says, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you” (Acts 17:23–24).

Still not a big fan of Harry Potter, but they do have a point. The problem is not the word, it’s what the word might mean. What most people call “witchcraft” or "magic" and what you see in movies or read in books is actually foreign to the Bible. Harry Potter’s version of magic, for instance, is more like the Force from Star Wars or the “bending” abilities from Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s explicitly NOT something involving demons or Satan. These kinds of “witches” are totally different from what the Bible means when it refers to sorcery, magic, and divination. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean all of those stories are A-OK for all people at all times. It’s fair to say that if a person’s not careful about such things, they can get confused about what’s real and what’s not. If someone had that issue, these kinds of stories could potentially affect their faith. But it is a matter of conviction more than anything else. The Bible definitely condemns all kinds of witchcraft, sorcery and spiritism (Deuteronomy 18:10-11), but that is a rule for real life—not necessarily in entertainment like books, movies, plays, etc. Still, the things we watch/read can have a pretty powerful effect on us, can't it? Movies and books can make us laugh, cry, or even believe in things we normally wouldn't. Harry Potter books and movies also don't have a very morally-positive worldview. The lines between good and bad are often hazy. For example, in the books, Harry, who is supposed to be a good guy, is one of the biggest liars ever, and most of the time, it turned out that lying was the best choice in that situation. Not exactly a good role model for life. Still, that doesn't mean that there is nothing positive to say about Harry Potter. Friendship, courage, loyalty, justice, and self-sacrifice are all themes that get explored throughout the stories. In fact, Harry's own mother died trying to save him. (Spoiler: That's how he got his famous lightning bolt scar.) Also, as bleak as things get for our heroes, good always wins over evil in the end. Harry faces his darkest fears and learns to be courageous and selfless. These are definitely godly traits (John 15:13)! We could go through every popular fantasy movie and give you a breakdown of the pros and cons, but what it really comes down to is this question: Are you personally able to distinguish between reality and fantasy, right and wrong, or good and evil? Would exposure to stories that involve magic or the supernatural leave you confused about God's views about the occult and/or demons or enchant you enough that you become desensitized to occult lifestyles? If you're not sure, then it might be good to skip magical or supernatural books and movies—at least until your faith is stronger. If you are firmly grounded in your belief in God and you know how He feels about the themes in fantasy books or movies, then it is possible that you could read/watch movies like Harry Potter as mere entertainment and still know in confidence that it will not influence your faith in God. Unlike much fantasy, such as the realm of Harry Potter, Narnia is another world—a separate creation from ours. In Narnia, what we would call "magic" is simply part of the created order (the wardrobe is actually from Narnia too, as you can read in The Magician's Nephew). Thus, the mythic elements are used as a vehicle to tell a bigger story, not to promote falsehood in the real world. And the wizards in The Lord of the Rings actually represent angels.

This is very disappointing..When satan tried to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, satan quoted a verse from the Bible. False prophets/teachers quote from the Bible. Point is, if the overall theme is not biblical (e.g. the occult/homosexuality/transgenderism/lust and sexual immorality) - it doesn't matter how many Bible verses are quoted in that book/film. That's like saying if a porn film has Bible verses and teaches that good wins over evil, then it's okay to watch it. Given a choice, would you shop for food in a supermarket or a dumpster? Looking for traces of godliness and God's word in occult themed books/films is like going to a dumpster. Quoting 2 Bible verses in an occultist themed book/film doesn't mean it's good for teaching about godliness.

"If it's not real what are we so afraid of?" If you look at a woman with lust you commit adultery in your heart. You don't have to really be with this woman to sin. You don't really have to be doing the magic to want to do it or want the entertainment above God Fantasy, thoughts, entertainment, these things lead to sin and can be sin in themselves. Stop treating sin like it's no big deal. Or that you don't have to fear it or God. I'm not saying to hide in a corner and never watch anything, but read the Bible more and use discernment. I don't think people do this enough to handle this type of entertainment maturely

Most importantly is that Good triumphs in the end.

A question that needs to be asked and what I believe one of the points of this book presents is “are there any righteous or good moral values in these stories ?“ the answer is a resounding yes. Where does good come from ? God , so anything righteous or good in these stories mimics the nature ,righteousness and goodness of God. It’s really that simple. Some parents block their kids from anything dealing with fantasy, while others will be more open BUT actually discuss the good values presented and lead them towards God. Sean McDowell was having a discussion with Frank Turek earlier about a speaking arrangement he gave to kids and how he used superheroes like Spider-Man and his values to show how Spider-Man and similar heroes borrow them from God. Bottom line is , EVERYTHING good and righteous is Gods, when you tell people that broken people who also may exemplify some good moral values and righteousness are completely evil , you then come off as confusing , unbelievable, or misinformed. Evil doesn’t own the entirety of someone (good&bad)because they are broken , God owns all that is righteous and good, so let’s start teaching that and quit letting the world dictate who the owner of righteousness is.

There are few among Hollywood made stories that are not laced with the occult, freemasonry, kabbalah, etc. The harry potter triangle symbol is a classic example. The people who make these movies are supporting the androgynous rebellion against God. I don’t like harry potter but I confess, these things are often entertaining. Hollywood isn’t helping lead anyone to a saving knowledge of Christ. They need to be exposed, not defended.

Wow Frank, I'm really disappointed that you are promoting such a wicked book. Superhero movies and comics teach people that we don't need Jesus Christ but instead we should rely on false gods (Iron Man (the mixing of iron and clay), Batman, Superman (a gnostic version of Christ), Wonder Woman, the Norse god Thor, etc) to "save humanity." Star Wars uses the Force which is white and black magic. And Harry Potter is a Jesus figure? Really? Potter is a literal WIZARD that openly promotes witchcraft. Come on Frank! There's absolutely nothing Christian about movies or books that promote wicked trash like superheroes and wizards. What ever happened to teaching kids straight from the Bible without filtering it through something else to make it "interesting?" I thought you were better than this.

With the resources available today literally for free, a Believer with a few million dollars can make a movie with CGI that rivals the first LOTR trilogy and even the Hobbit. Unreal Engine is a company whose software is behind the most advanced games and visual effects today. They offer their resources for free to anyone to use and only take about five percent of any profits over a million dollars. You can do today with a small team what Peter Jackson needed a hundred to do. You just need to network and make it happen.

Some fundamentalist parents will always object to something that is not explicitly devotional and that has become so popular that they fear it will make their kids stray from what they believe is the right path. Perhaps they also fear that if their kids can understand that the magic in Harry Potter is fiction, that they will soon start to understand that the magic in the Bible is fiction as well.

Especially movies like Harry Potter since it references a similar kind of sorcery from the false gods of the bible. I mean, even if it references god himself, some might interpret this as idolatry. I’m certain this is how Christianity treats other religions as well. They wouldn’t say “Islam is fiction” or “Hinduism is fiction”. It’s all under a demonic influence that idolises false gods. What’s the threshold people? If you like Spider-Man, bad luck it’s demonic?
