I was jealous of my college friends who were learning BASIC on mainframes at 300 BAUD, while my courses were in FORTRAN. I showed off to the girls by printing out reams of code on the DEC Line Printer, because at the time we didn't have terminals. I continued BASIC on the Radio Shack Color Computer, and then the Atari 520ST, at which point I departed and learned Modula-2. I downloaded the above described program from geoffg's, and I may try it at least once, but I can already see it's not going to stick, as I am having good luck with Micropython and C on my Pico.>> <<@saammytagum9004 says : thank you sir>> <<@garypowell-squash-wizards says : Sorry Chris, it’s Microbit I thought might be a good subject for your next video.>> <<@andic6676 says : Chris...I have just built a six digit (HH:MM:SS) Nixie clock with a full multiplex display with everything controlled by a Pi Pico running MMBASIC. I didn't use any GPIO latches or any other "fancy" hardware to control the columns and digits...so it addresses the 6x10 matrix formed directly through it's GPIOs...and...it works! It is a little flickery but its display is perfectly usable, which is really impressive considering how slow BASIC code is. If you use a terminal emulator like Terra Term, you can access XMODEM protocols allowing MMBASIC to save to/retrieve from files to/from an external computer with ease.>> <<@EnjoySynthSounds says : Very enjoyable.>> <<@mahoneytechnologies657 says : So far I have not been able to get any Math function beyond basic Arithmatic to work, all commands are not reccognized! is this a Bug being worked on, or will math commands beyond Basic Aritmatic not happen? By the way your teach style is tops, easy to understand and given at the right speed, easy to follow! Thanks! I started out in Assembly but basic was first - in my first time on a Time Shared Terminal at Foothill College I remember first typing in " Who are You? ", No Answer! Disapointment! Yes I too built Sinclar Basic board for my sons, I worked At HP and we used HP Basic, we Used Labels With GOTOs, this was No Problem! Maybe people would have Likes CALL better than GOTO. GOTO a LABEL worked just Fine! Actually I like Pascal Best, very Readable, When I Wrote Forth Programs they Lookd Like Pascal. Pascal as a Compiled Program would be great, The Syntax of C and C++ is just asking for Mistakes! missing a Semicolon generates a seemingly Endless string of errors! When I was working in Japan there were Many Nights where I spent working until 4 or 5 AM chasing BUGS then to go to work at 6:30 AM, Ah those Missing Semi Colons - and Just Trying One More Thing! The most fun Programming language was Forth. I remember a young guy on a fellowship at IBM asking me to do a regulated power supply board for him, he was getting an INTEL board that he was going to write a Forth System for, OK I thought I CAN DO A POWER SUPPLY BOARD FOR YOU. when I gave him the Board in the evening he took it and the next Morning he came over and asked me if I wanted to see Forth in Action! It Ran! He said he only had to Write 512 Bytes of assembly then he finished by writeing his forth in Forth, defining Forth Words ( Named Functions )!!! Will what can I say, there is a nice example of an INTEL 8080 Assembler written in Forth on a Single Page ! What I like about the Pi Pico is there is Arduino based C++, C, C++, Basic, Forth, and even a Pascal all for free to try, I think even more, I think I heard of a RUST variation. there must be more.>> <<@dabunnisher29 says : Geoff, you and the other contributors are AWESOME! I've built a Colour Maximite (in addition to using Picomite) which I find is ideal for prototyping. It's worth noting that this is a locally-developed Australian product (maximite.....vegemite....it all makes sense now!), which I find to be unusual given that we missed out on a lot of the 80's computing craze. Retro machines like the C64 are rare around here and you can't easily get one, let alone the peripherals and cartridges, if you want to experience retro computing. The Colour Maximite isn't a direct C64 replacement but it has that same spirit of "friendly computing".>> <<@SpeccyMan says : The Pi Picos are currently Β£5.50 including the header pins so I've ordered 2 of them.
