She was an elevator operator. She said she opened her door to the lobby and saw Baby Face Nelson standing on the counter spraying the ceiling with his Tommy gun. She told me, "I closed my elevator door and hit the button for the top floor." I always wondered if this bit of family history was true until I learned Dillinger did indeed Rob the bank in Sioux Falls, my grandmother did in fact work at the bank as an elevator operator. When I saw the scene in the movie where Baby Face stood on the counter and let his Tommy gun rip, I realized there wasn't much reason to doubt. The bank itself was only a few blocks from the place she lived.>> <<@malice9240 says : My great grandma when she was growing up actually he pulled up to there house and asked for pickles, and bought it. In particular, New Carlisle less than 30 minutes away where Dillinger spent his time in county lockup is a treasure trove of information. The post-mortem reported that the corpse had contracted rheumatic fever when it was younger, ie causing damage to his heart; in other words, Dillinger would have failed his navy medical AND the eyes were a different colour to Dillinger's. Also, pressmen present were shown "Dillinger's" naked corpse by an attendant. He quipped "Well hung, ain't he?" Cooper story crops up every single November; although he most likely died after exiting the jet, it's fun to think that he might have gotten away with it. Billy the Kid, Bonnie and Clyde, Dillinger and several others all lived short violent lives, and yet we are generationally fascinated by them.>> <<@withintheshyness says : 41 stolen chickens?>> <<@mitchellneu says : Went to Chicago a few years back. My parents grew up in northern Minnesota during the 1920's and '30's. Gangsters would live in the hills at times near there. By doing so they could scurry over into Canada to evade law enforcement should the need arise. My Mom said at times when going to the nearest town to pick up odds and ends they would see the gun molls doing the same. The men would send their women who weren't wanted by the law. It was easy to identify the women who were dressed to the nines in colorful clothing. During the depression they made quite an impression.>>
