I think he's more remembered than all those guilded age presidents. That's actually one thing I've enjoyed lately... everyone calls it McKinley...who cares about it's original names... that's fundamentally not how naming places works... Names change through time due to cultural changes. We've had a real cultural shift in North America... it's disingenious and fake to try to go back.>> <<@johnbekkos1327 says : Interestingly, the Filipinos and their revolutionary republic, led by General Emilio Aguinaldo, were actually willing to compromise with America, expressed by him as early as his meeting with Spencer Pratt in late April 1898 in Singapore for an alliance with America: to make the Philippines a protectorate (footnote of Teodoro Kalaw's The Philippine Revolution, pages 91-92, provides testimony on this). Pratt promised that America would recognize Philippine independence, though he later claimed he said no such thing (proven false by the two aforementioned testimonies above). Still, Aguinaldo and his government worked towards the goal of independence with such promises in mind even after Manila fell on 13 August 1898 and the Filipinos were prohibited from entering it. Aguinaldo protested but quit it later, though based on John R.M. Taylor's Compilation of Philippine Insurgent Records, Aguinaldo is secretly preparing to invade Manila. Now, after the war with America began on 4 February 1899, the First Philippine Republic tried many times to broker the same compromise with the Schurman Commission, especially during the peace negotiations from April to May 1899 led by Apolinario Mabini, the prime minister at the time. America - McKinley, particularly—insisted on full annexation with very limited Filipino participation. Another time in late May 1899, Aguinaldo and his new pro-American Prime Minister (Mabini was removed from office by Aguinaldo after Congress forced him to do so), Pedro Paterno, were now in favor of the American offer, only to be stalled by Chief of Staff Antonio Luna in late May 1899 when he arrested Aguinaldo's cabinet, a coup in the making. It stopped the pro-Americans from getting what they want. If only McKinley and America just accepted such propositions...>> <<@zanedineokhosa7924 says : Trumps role model>> <<@David-j5g4b says : His father-in-law was tantamount to William Randolph Hearst of the Midwest. At least where I am from in the US, McKinley was largely overlooked because of the focus on Populism and Progressivism. My teacher wanted to focus on the Gilded Age, and how it would come to end by the Great Depression. Both Roosevelts were much more central to that theme, and McKinley was portrayed as a puppet of big businesses (Hence the anarchist assassination). Fascinating to get more insight on the man.>> <<@WineConsulate says : Here in 2025. Trump is trying to emulate McKindley and I just wanted to learn more about him. Yes... it makes sense. I have a feeling that history was written, or rewritten, by liberal leaning authors. It also feels like history is repeating itself right now and we shall soon find out what McKinley’s true legacy is. Personally, I agree that the Trump tariffs are a great idea and I question if the McKinley tariffs were thwarted by other policy or politicians. Trump’s first term would have been a lot better if obstructionists had not prevented his plans from happening. I believe America is entering a golden age of prosperity and I believe American success will lead to a richer and freer WORLD. When Americans have more money we spend it, why wouldn’t it be spent on luxury imported goods from other countries? If I suddenly had 30% more expendable income I would buy a German car, other people would buy Italian suits or purses, others will value things made in other countries. Other things would be made in America and foreign businesses would have to invest in America by building their business in America to avoid the tariffs. My point is that Made In America still has value and MADE IN ITALY (insert any other country that is known for a specific product) still has value. I don’t see how this could possibly fail so I question what is the TRUE story of McKinley’s tariffs because it doesn’t add up and the documentary seemed biased.>> <<@cstonemma says : So glad Mount KcKinley with be renamed like it shoud be, Mt.
