The North and South had been at loggerheads for decades about the slavery issue, both with opposing viewpoints. A conflict between the North and South was inevitable, despite legal remedies like the Missouri Compromise, the Kansas Nebraska Act, And the Dred Scott decision. Bleeding Kansas was the forerunner of the conflict. If John Brown hadn’t been the catalyst, something or someone else would have. I should also point out the mishandling of Southern secessionist and slavery issues by Lincoln’s predecessors, Presidents Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan, didn’t help any.
