For months I was hesitant to watch this episode, but I’m finally relieved after watching it. Didn’t want to lose your “character”. You and the show are amazing. Learning about the way things work gives me some insight into this existence. It’s nice to see how big brained humans think, I have been seeing enough of small brained thinking in the government, loved the Newcombs paradox.

It's always going to be concerning when investors get their hands on a project that was previously driven by passion. I have faith that much, if not all of the team that actually works on the videos right now has that passion. I don't have much of a problem with a new team taking over, even if this channel was originally just you. But who actually makes the executive decisions does matter. And if the ones who make them are driven by profit, then this channel will suffer for it. Maybe it won't be "bad", maybe it'll still be content of decent quality, but at the very least, it's going to feel a lot more corporate. And it's likely going to blend in with the rest of educational YouTube a lot more, rather than feeling unique. At some point, it's likely that the original goal of this channel, centered around truth and critical thinking, will be abandoned, as profit takes priority.

This is a truly incredible video for someone who is just starting out as a video creator like me. I have no idea who I will become or what I will achieve 5 or 10 years down the line if I keep pushing forward, but your amazing video has given me a glimpse of what's possible. Your content is exceptional—not just for the audience, but also for fellow creators. Your channel has given me so much inspiration and motivation to start working on my very first clips. Thank you so much. Wishing you great health, and may your channel continue to grow and carry on this journey of delivering knowledge to viewers in the most visual and captivating way possible!

Hello! I have a question about geometrical optics that I just can't fully understand. I would really love to see a dedicated video explaining it with detailed diagrams. I'm not interested in just how the eye works. What I really want to understand is why images do not get mixed together, even though light rays from different objects cross each other in space. For example: - Every point on the Moon (or the Sun) emits an enormous number of light rays. Some of these rays cross each other before they reach the eye. Why doesn't this cause us to see flipped or mixed-up parts of the image? - If, at a certain point in space, light rays from two different objects (for example, two different walls of a room) are passing through the same location at the same time, then why, if an eye were placed at that point, wouldn't the images become mixed together? Why does the eye still form two separate images instead of one chaotic combination? - How is angular size actually formed? I would really appreciate an explanation from the perspective of geometrical optics, with diagrams showing many light rays, not just the usual two boundary rays. I'd love to understand what happens to the entire bundle of rays and why crossing rays do not mix the information from different objects.

This video is a rare moment of a creator being transparent about the tension between making a living and staying true to the original mission of a channel. I think the criticism that Veritasium has become more 'produced' misses the point, longer, more polished videos cost more to make, and sponsorships are what fund that. What I'd push back on is the assumption that popularity and depth are automatically at odds. Some of his most sponsored, most viral videos have also been his most substantive. Maybe the real question isn't whether creators should monetize, but whether audiences are willing to pay directly enough that they wouldn't have to.

I have given myself a long time to think about this and i have come to the conclusion, that i will unsub and block Veritasium on all media i know. Dont get me wrong, I love(d) the videos. They were well made and interesting! I cannot stand for private equity buying up channels. The original creators will be replaced and its just a cash grab for PE. The channels will become faceless facades and host essentially zero original content.

So, before we get on, I want to state that I have watched the video and heard and understood Derek's points. I genuinely believe that working with Electrify has increased the channel's reach, and having more skilled professionals onboard has improved the quality and effectiveness of videos, though the informational aspect remains mostly unchanged (the videos are as informative as they were back when I started watching Veritasium). Keeping the uncertainty of the future aside, I am not worried about the direction in which Veritasium is headed, especially content wise, since the results speak for themselves. The only thing that bothers me is the intent behind creating videos will change, and it's inevitable. By outsourcing or bringing more people in, the intent behind video making shifts. And somewhere along the lines it moves more towards money making, which, in this economy, is absolutely necessary. One can chase money while staying true to the ideas that led to the creation of the channel, it all depends on how the intent of the whole team aligns. What we want is for it to not get too stretched out, because that is when the channel loses its spark. That intent is now changing. With a private firm now calling shots, the channel is for sure going to lose or rather reshape its original intent/idea to suit a corporation's, it is, after all, an investment. It's basically a team of independent creators (which the channel used to be) with independent views and opinions V/S an equity firm protecting corporate interests. A lot of people would argue that it won't matter much for an informative channel such as this. But it does. It does for an informative channel as much as it does for a political/satirical one, or a comedy channel, or even a kids' channel. It is about principles, the only thing that makes youtube special. Youtube channels are owned by people, people who present their independent views on this beautiful platform via videos. Other people engage with these videos and follow those whose principles align with their own. It is this aspect that sets youtube apart from TV channels, streaming platforms, etc. Corporate ownership breaks the sanctity of this bond. A company comes in with a big heap of money and a promise for a team of creators at their disposal, job security, insurance, etc. and slowly starts calling shots instead of the person who literally birthed the youtube channel. Just like it does with multiple other channels. And lo! there goes the passion of the project. It turns into an investment, a money-making machine. And us viewers, stats on someone's balance sheets. In a world of corporate ownership, the most effective way to rebel is by being independent. But when your favorite youtube channels become corporate investments, who can you really trust?
