The point of the thought experiment back then was to show the flaw in the Copenhagen interpretation and how absurd it was because a cat cannot be both alive and dead at the same time. Personally I also don't agree with decoherence theory where the cat, the air inside the box, and the poison mechanism act as observers themselves. This interaction with the environment causes quantum decoherence, forcing the quantum state to "choose" a reality almost instantly, long before a human ever opens the lid.
