Because the awkward placement of the residues is just too crude to be done by nature. It’s as if someday we woke up and saw the Mona Lisa was painted blue from the bottom to just below her eyes and we’re discussing wether it was done deliberately or due to some unlikely but natural aging process. None of it has to do with the actual process of taking an existing virus, genetically modify it and study the effects: 1. How lethal is it. 2. How well does it transmit to other hosts. 3. Who does it target. Is it better or worse then the other viruses? Better? Cool, let's use this as the base for further manipulation then. And it's fairly low risk with the mutations of the virus. Covid vaccines worked very well, even though we had hundreds of different mutations of the virus out there. It's a viable military strategy. If a virus effects people who are overweight for example, then you're targeting 50% of all Americans, but only 10% of asians. If you have also created a vaccine for your side, then again. Very viable strategy. For gods sake, they had the entire genome mapped from day 1. This is just...disappointing.
