I don't agree with your usual Musk beating, but in this case I do agree. He is well over-extended on something he doesn't really understand. EVs are good, Teslas are good and batteries are good, Musks delays and overpromises were not that bad, but this is all easy compared to space travel.

Even before Kennedy, NASA itself was created largely for propaganda purposes. It was created under Eisenhower in 1958 after the Soviets launched Sputnik a year earlier and in order to provide a civilian and peace-oriented veneer for the missile program. Eisenhower was an old-school fiscal conservative (boy, does the world need more people like him) but relented from the increasing pressure from various vested interests (from scientists to educators) for federal funding so the US would not "fall behind" the USSR. Space and space exploration is really just nationalistic propaganda... and some things just seem to never change.

No exaggeration: Destin *saved lives* with that speech. It seems to have woken NASA up and pulled the wool from their eyes. SpaceX would've bullsh*tted their way towards a disaster that made Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia pale in comparison. Think astronauts stranded on the lunar surface or in lunar orbit, or a life-support system that fails halfway between Earth and Mars (not that they'll ever be in a position to get to Mars). Thank you, Destin.

I'm not sure why anyone is surprised by this whole Artemis debacle. It fits exactly the pattern of the majority of Elon Musk's hair brained schemes or more accurately, scams. If Elon does not spend a few decades in jail then I really fear for the future of the US.
>>
<<@runem5429
says :
Your irrational Elon hate audit is complete: You fail, hard, yet again. There is no way you could write the script the way it is unless you're specifically intending to take whack after whack at Elon, and everything else is secondary...yet again. Fx, you *absolutely should* have mentioned the actual origin of the main clusterfck of Artemis - that the whole mission and orbit structure has been designed around NASAs inadequate new Orion capsule and it's half-assed service module with near zero delta-v. But that said, personally, I am for using a Zubrin style Low Earth Orbit to Moon surface and back cycler for all human surface landings and return. And having no orbiting lunar station or least not making it a required component of the surface operations. And the role for Starship would only be to bring stuff into LEO and letting it proceed on it's own from there in more efficient ways. I would only being entire Startships to the Moon only for one-way cargo-landing and reuse on surface as habitation if that can be made attractive. And I think it's better to use a lower Moon orbit in stead of the highly eccetric one, and in stead install a set of Starlink satelittes or similar to make sure there is constant communication between Earth, surface and any ship or station in the area.
