Since the stone age, "magic" has been about the knowledge of controlling and getting information from spirits (why God has forbidden it!). Only in the last few hundred years has magic become an impersonal force that can be controlled by "the elite" (a very Gnostic concept). I fear that Screwtape's hope is coming to pass.
