9:43 yeah I’ve always had an issue with properly estimating and visualizing feet! But I thought engineers would’ve had it down. I’m glad to know that they don’t. I repelled down a train bridge, to me it was 500 feet! But the rope that I used was 150 feet. And there was plenty left over “so I put on the rig, tied the rope in the middle between two a frames I’m guessing 100 feet apart. Climbed down one of them, then swung out. Unhooked and repelled on down. I still can’t believe I did that! That was a time where you’re at the age when you live forever”!
But a good way to look at feet, if you’re 50 feet up & you suspend A Car with a nose exactly at 50 feet. Releasing it. It should be roughly 50 mph when it hits the ground. So and so forth.

I was in the Navy in the late 70s and early 80s. When I reported to my first command, my ship was in the shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. My first time underway was when we had to leave the shipyard to run from hurricane Frederick. We tried running down the coast towards Texas, but the seas became extremely rough and were hitting us directly on the port side, threatening to capsize us. We had no choice but to turn into the hurricane and take it head on. All I can say is that Hollywood doesn’t have a clue. Hell of a way to get broken in. After that, no seas were too rough.

I somehow happen to know something about the open water basins, ship design, ship motions, sea waves, similitude principles, etc. (luckily more academic stuff and not related to Navy). There's a fascinating hydrodynamics and science in general beyond everything that you see happening in there. Derek pulled a few facts in an entertaining way, but each of them are not artificially cooked up, but rather result from several developed theories. When you stand on a cariage and enjoy the ride, while observing the sensor readings, you can really feel and admire the scale and engineering complexity of such facility.
