One thing to remember when dealing with kids also is that as they get older, sometimes they are cranky because their bones are growing and it aches. I remember those pains very well, and sometimes all they need is that pain to be acknowledged. It's always worked well for me when we've talked about it when they are cranky.

I don't have kids of my own but I did help my sister/sisters-in-laws when they needed help. Kids are a huge responsibility and you can't help but melt whenever they're 'acting' cute... Now I do something similar for my disabled dad just about everyday.
