Gasping awake out of your sleep and panicking sounds like you stopped breathing and have obstructive sleep apnea where when untreated can lead to depression, anxiety, and a lot of other things. If you jerk awake at night before falling asleep talk to your primary doctor and get a sleep study done to check for sleep apnea. Your anxiety could just be caused from lack of sleep and sleep deprivation potentially. Just something to look into.
