Just to clear up why this is dangerous:
1. As stated in the video, shade balls are heavy - making it harder to swim to safety. They also make you more tired causing a negative feedback loop.
2. Imagine you were in a deeper and larger body of water, if you slip below the surface you need to push up through the heavy shade balls, similar to swimming under ice. You would also need to swim further to safety, whereas in a pool you're never that far from the edge or the bottom.
In this demonstration it’s safer because for starters it’s not the LA reservoir; it’s a much smaller body of water; there are plenty of people around and there are fewer shade balls.
