My grandfather recently died of long term asbestos related disease/related condition. Let me tell you it is no joke. Seeing the sad evolution of his lung capacity diminishing throughout the years until they were at barely 30ish %... during his last few months... every breath became a struggle and everyday were filled with anxiety. Imagine being out of breath 24/7 without even moving and without ever feeling like you could not be out of breath... furthermore there is no cure and the condition just gets worst over time until the body eventually shuts down... RIP papi

Im 20. Growing up i would get to go into Claire’s and see so many things i wanted. All my friends had things like those little makeup phones but i was told we were too poor to buy those things for me so i just got to look. Being grown i have always been grateful for that kind of upbringing as hard as it was because it made me who i am today. But now i have another reason to be grateful for that, i didn’t have play makeup with asbestos in it as a child.

I'm from Sri Lanka and my country is sadly one of top importers of asbestos in the world. There was an attempt to ban asbestos before 2020 but later it was said that 80% of all the asbestos imported is used to make roofing sheets made from Chrysotile or white asbestos and cement which account for more than 53% of the country's roofing material use and because of the cost of other alternative roofing materials it didn't happen. I've seen with my own eyes where sometimes workers cut these sheets inappropriately with no protection and people around them mostly because of lack of knowledge. Most people doesn't even realise it's a problem.

Throughout 1930s-1960s there was a coordinated effort by DuPont and others to ban all sorts of natural fiber materials, because they needed the market for their artificial fibers. Among most notable are Cannabis and Asbestos. Sure, Asbestos is dangerous, but so is glass fiber, and even carbon fiber, and let's not forget today's popular "mineral wool" used for isolation, especially in EU. The problem is not Asbestos itself, but inhaling small, needle-like fibers (of ANY material), which lodge themselves in the lungs and stay there. Modern buildings in EU nowadays contain polystyrene, mineral wool, resin floors, all those modern chemistry materials, which are super-easy to work with, and exposure is safe for one material, but mix them together, add a bit of air conditioning and microplastic exposure, and you live in an interesting environment compared to which asbestos exposure is a breeze.
So, to conclude, sure, it would be a stupidity to expose yourself to asbestos fibers long-term. But the issue is so much overblown, with the scary chemical suits and all, just because they want to ban the cheap and natural material and they want to sell you more expensive materials, which are as much dangerous as asbestos itself. Big companies never cared for your health, only their profit.
