15:20 - happened to me just today. I was in another city, which I visited just 2 times before in my life. Google maps showed me a road. I notices it was very complicated. Left turns, right turns, small streets (and some of them might be blocked or one way streets), and I noticed there was a longer way to reach my destination, but it was all on main streets, with 4 lanes and only 2 right turns. So I took te longer route and got to my destination with no problems.

wouldn't it be helpful to know the crows flight distance to your destination? then you know the least possible cost. would think that could help eliminate exploring realy bad choices. if you also take into consideration the vector included in that information then you can calculate how far you're deviating from the optimal path. think there are other problems here like assigning values to sections of that you're looking at because of speed limits or being heavily trafficked or being one direction. never really thought about this, though google maps was the killer app for my phone when i finally got a smart phone. probably threw out enough paper maps from my trunk and glove box after i got my first smart phone. has mad life on the road much easier.

This was one of the original ways a man proved that a computer could be useful by making all of the algorithms shown in the video to show how it could find you the fastest route this is code using a weighted point system to determine what route is the fastest and is what all current day GPS systems use a modified version of. This is code Ai is a completely different concept entirely. Ps Veritasium has a video on it titled (Google Maps is unreasonably fast. Let me explain)

From experience, fastest travel time in city driving involves not the shortest distance, but the route that has the least intersections and traffic lights while avoiding bus and public transportation routes.

How does pre-processing work, when traffic congestion is included? The weights are continually changing, so preprocessing all nodes is too lengthy. Google must do everything on a hierarchical basis, and continually limit what intersections are considered. From there it's Dykstra. What a stud.

Seeing the map of the Netherlands @0:52 in this video gave me at first a vibe of watching the product of some AI that apparently figured out that I'm watching this from within the Netherlands (which as such is easy), adapting the contents of a video presentation to regional conditions (which is not that obvious, I guess). But no, showing the Netherlands was because of the central role that Edsger Dijkstra played for the scope of this video. I must admit that I never heard of him, which makes me feel ashamed of myself. Further on in the video, we get lots of Germans that work on the subject of mapping routes from the mathematical perspective. The TomTom company is Dutch. What is it with the Dutch and the Germans, being so involved in this subject?

Google Maps is surprisingly unreliable. In urban areas, it bypasses clear priority roads just to route you through endless stop signs, while in rural areas, it either leads you onto non-existent roads or sends you on massive detours instead of taking the obvious direct path

There's this back road that I use when I want to get to the city that's about 3 minutes shorter than taking a main road. I noticed that if I ask Google Maps to take me to a point of the road about 20 minutes away it will suggest the back road, but if I go much further away it will ignore it and suggest the main road. Since I discovered this, I figured that Maps will ignore back roads more once the distance is beyond a certain threshold.

There are usually only 2 or 3 logical routes the longer the trip gets across the US. Once you own the data and know which routes people take the most, the algorithm becomes pretty quick.

It was going fast until for some reason they swap to "shortest travel time" if you leave in 30 mins. Instead of the previous iteration including wait time in the whole travel time. Idk how to make it go away. This feature is killing me if anybody could help I would appreciate it

Surely it would just judge the shortest routes that intersect a straight line from point a to b then factor in traffic. It wouldn't need to consider all, obviously, longer routes.
