By that logic, anyone with a utility knife can just cut along the fabric part of the zipper. The locks help prevent stealthy pocketing of items inside, so that you won't get all the way to your destination and only find out then. If your luggage arrived all cut up or with a busted zipper you'd be able to apply for reimbursement, or something.

those are completely different types of zipper though. the one on the suitcase is made by a spiral of nylon filament packed close together and sewn flat. Their advantage is that they are great for applications onto a bending or flexible closure line. but they do not last as long and are easy to open by poking straight through like you did. if you tried that with a typical toothed zipper, it would not have the same result at all.
