Head to https://hensonshaving.com/veritasium and use code ‘veritasium ’ to get 100 free blades with the purchase of a razor. Make sure to add both the razor and the blades to your cart for the code to take effect.

Have you made a serious error? Spiders have been astounding researchers with feats of intellect. They make informed choices, for which type of silk to spin depending on requirement. They use various organs to produce different silks. Can we confidently assert that we aren’t adversely affecting how those glands work during silk creation? Is it possible they are modulating components of the silk blend as it is formed, perhaps even ratios of the amino acids? Can you guarantee that pulling the silk from an unconscious spider does not produce inferior silk?

so spiderman gets his web by milking himself too?

Irregularities in spider silk makes it more weak than steel in macro scale

23:42 :You should have played the 1967 Spider-Man TV show theme here. Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Does whatever a spider can...

Cool, we made spider man. Now Hulk.

thank you so much for the warning about the spiders

How does the spider know when to switch types of silk when it's spinning a web?

I had an old friend from high school he told me when he joined the marines they were conducting experiments on this bc they knew spider silk was super strong.....it was 2020 something tho when he told me, spider man was been out my only thought now now that i actually think about it is why it took them so long to look into this? My history teacher told me during his time usa was soon one day going to use the moon as fuel instead of gas....its 2026 and we are fighting for the moon, elon already made robots to build a home at the moon alone for humans.....its 2026..

My God! Hollywood somehow manages to promote the Spider-Man movie. Even in a science video.
@DragonwolfoftheSands Says:
why not modify larger spiders to produce better silk?
@noone-o1n5s Says:
Sir please make some pure physics and pure math videos also, like the electrical graph sheet video thing you did, or the entropy and thermodynamics videos you have done earlier.

Why does this video have to have a warning/disclaimer in regards to spider footage? Rofl
@docdirtymrclean3610 Says:
Would a bigger Spider ( the Madagascar variant mentioned) , produce " bigger" or " stronger " silk? Does scaling work like that? Or would it be the Spider just produces more of the silk not a stronger one?
@Balloon_xwpl0xox Says:
Since I know the title will change, as of the time of me writing this comment, the title of this video is "Is spider silk really stronger than steel?".
@lethargy_coffee Says:
If i had a nickel for every video about milking spiders that i watched on youtube i'd have 2 nickels, which is not a lot but it's weird that it happened twice

I remember in grade 9 when I found out spider silk had the tensile strength of steel. I went down a rabbit hole and found nexia biotechnology and followed it for a few years. So happy to see this video on my feed this morning.

I love this channel. It doesn't numb down, it deals with real physics which of course is based in math. However , my high school math is distinctly rusty and in almost all the videos, I need more time to absorb it. Would it be possible to go through the math at a more gentle pace?

So in the end, it all comes down to gambling

Don't feel bad, Spider-Man's spider silk is also not actually made by spiders.

@Vojtech-l6x Says:
I'm quite sad that they didn't mention dyneema UHMWPE, or climbing rope grade polyamide. But I guess that than the spider silk wouldn't sound that marvelous.
@RateroftheCreator Says:
Throughout the video it is said, that spider web is stronger than steel by weight, but it is never mentioned by diameter, so what is stronger by diameter? (@viewers: please don’t post an AI answer)
@danielu1763 Says:
Climbing ropes stretch not so much to keep from breaking as to keep from snapping the climber himself in half. Imagine falling 30 feet and being caught by a wire cable. Ouch!
@el_es Says:
Mattias Krantz had guitar strings made off the stuff ... and recorded it for youtube :)
@omgninja66 Says:
Long story short. Yes 100% stronger. It's a fact
@seanewing204 Says:
Still don't understand why we can't domesticate spiders. Their lifecycles are super short, a few years at most, it shouldn't be hard to breed for silk strength, neighbir tolerance, web tenure, etc.
