Residential areas are gradually appearing around the industries that are setting up in the city. In the 1930s, the areas of Kinshasa, Barumbu and Lingwala developed near the port. After 1950, Lemba, Matete and parts of Ndjili, to the southeast, were built to house workers from the new Limete industrial district. The most central communes (today zones) of Dendale (today Kasa-Vubu), Bandalungwa and Ngiri-Ngiri became the socio-political heart of the city.
In 1960, Léopoldville became the capital of the new independent Congolese republic. It was renamed Kinshasa in 1966. The city prospered after independence and saw its population grow rapidly. In the mid-1990s, Kinshasa became the center of the rebel insurgency against the Zairian regime of Mobutu Sese Seko, who was overthrown by Laurent-Désiré Kabila in 1997. Since then, a climate of rebellion has persisted and the city, overpopulated by new arrivals, is going through serious economic difficulties.
