Misleading title, it was tampered with so it would have worked..
@Bread-b3m Says:
Escalator mechanic here. It was disabled because it keeps tripping and the company doesn’t want to give us what we need to fix it properly.
@RedGuy-wy2gg Says:
Guess escalators can break, I thought they just become stairs

@blauemadeleine Says:
On 23 October 2018, an escalator at Repubblica metro station in Rome malfunctioned and accelerated uncontrollably while crowded with football fans. The incident occurred just over an hour before the UEFA Champions League match between CSKA Moscow and AS Roma at the Olympic Stadium.
Key facts:
- 24 people were injured, 7 seriously. One person had a foot partially crushed, and at least two others required surgery for leg injuries.
- Most of the injured were CSKA Moscow fans heading to the stadium.
- Video footage showed the escalator suddenly speeding up, causing people to tumble and become trapped at the bottom, with stairs crumpling and exposing jagged metal plates.
- Initial reports suggested fans were jumping or dancing on the escalator, but this was later disproven by police reviewing the footage.

Just use a worm gear drive
@notaspy3751 Says:
Who the hell thinks “yeah let’s zip tie this safety mechanism shut, I’m sure nothing dangerous can happen”?
@knockturnall Says:
It's also astonishing how many cable car disasters happened because someone disabled a malfunctioning safety device instead of fixing it.
@anthonyiannone7618 Says:
now the dems want to ban Rip Ties.
@cladosdiamantes8786 Says:
Clearly sabotage
@VOROX_Audio Says:
What's absolutely insane to me here is that there was a plastic strap on only one of the things. Someone went in there, fully intending to disable that emergency mechanism, but only did it halfsies. I have no idea why you would do such a thing, but IF you were gonna do it, why do it only halfway???
@Golddust110 Says:
Someone did maintenance and forgot their zip tie
@averycheesypotato Says:
People always imagine elevators suddenly falling many stories down, but never appreciate how dangerous escalators can actually be
@bloocheez3 Says:
Why did people keep getting on once it was obvious the thing was bugging out?
@Dragoneer Says:
Weeeeeee
@arkama67 Says:
probably last maintenance technician
@goldoshaino Says:
This is quite common in Italy actually, there have been at least a couple company owners sentenced to jail because they disabled machines's safety measures and workers died.
Deaths on the job are generally quite high in Italy as the managements will absolutely screw over everyone else to make more profits.

@KO-pk7df Says:
Unfortunately technicians who do those thing are in every industry and they get rewarded by management for getting things done "fast" whilr the ones who take the time to do the job properly get called "slow". Yes every industry even the ones called "life critical" !!

Side note, love the beard man

@keaton718 Says:
They should make the tipping point on the motor one more person than there are number of stairs on the escalator so it never tips.
