A flexible weapon should be used as if it were solid. This means keep a spinning momentum with the weapon so that it basically remains straight.
That being said, this also means you will not be using a flexible weapon as if it were a blunt instrument.
I could picture using this weapon as if you would a scimitar or other large curved weapon. Lots of draw strokes and slashing not so much hacking.
I could also see using this almost like a steel whip although you definitely will not be doing coiling or wrapping maneuvers with it.
It still looks like a fun (although decorative-only) toy.

A real flail act and works because has a heavy weight on the end of the chain/whip and gives innerce to the hit, impacting with the heavy weighted(and most often spiked) end of the chain and/or besides doing you a grapling whith the chain.
So this weapon is not a flail, is a whip, and besides of that you simply hit the box(you are not swinging the flail enough for giving it innerce,and not let it grapple around the box and then doing the pulling come back.
because of it damage is minor.besides, a box gives not the same density and opposite ressistance that a real body, so its another reason damage is minor.for doing truely accurate, you should use ballistic gel,that emulates body ressistance to hits(i suppose on ebay you could buy a litre or two at cheap price(i dont think it go far 15$)
Well,well, done it would be with a ballistic gel dummie like it is shown in the weapons program "forged in fire"
This is a weapon not seen in no one place, so it would be great to see the real damages on a body (with the ballistic gel). or you could send a suggestion to the program, asking them to proof the weapon at live(cheaper option ),and ask some friends doing too, for the program realizing that are very people interested in it and forearms nally do the edged flail/edged whip program.

It would be effective if he knew what he was doing. A chain whip is not for just waking stuff. You’re supposed to follow through with a fluid motion to make use of the blades it’s a whip not a bat. It’s a blade not a bat you have to give some effort.

3 problems, some you addressed.
1; it's not well made or designed. The blades are too wide and heavy.
2; It's a show piece "wall hanger" conversation piece.
3; You're not using it properly. A real whip sword of about 12 foot length in the hands of someone fully trained to use it in combat can decapitate over a dozen enemies with one lash. But it can take decades to be trained well enough to use a whip sword. It's not simple like a hammer, which is how you're trying to use it. You don't slap your target like it's a nail in a board. It's a whip sword, not a long sword.

I truly appreciate all the efforts you made to show how effective the sword whip could be as a weapon, thank you. But please allow me to suggest a few other adjustments to have it be be even more effective and "bad ass" as you put it.
First suggestion would be to use steel or titanium rivets (I always forget which of those two metals are sturdier sorry) instead of the softer bronze rivets. That would make it less likely you would need to make numerous repairs.
And second suggestion I'd venture to make would be to work on the speed of your attack. With whip type weapons irl, speed of application translates into damage when you hit.

First I suggest non-flat blades - maybe 3 blades sort of like the tri-blade arrows or bolts. A chain of those would still cut even if the chain twists. Next, as someone else noted, swing and then pull back to slice. It would cause terrible injuries. Perhaps a longer handle and shorter chain could prevent a lot of self-injuries.

Honestly a "weapon" like this is more of a torture device. You sharpen this and whack your prisoners in the dungeons until they beg for mercy, or they bleed out.
I would not classify this as a weapon for the battlefield.

A good setup for a test would be a soft target (perhaps partially armored) behind a simulated shield. Clearly the purpose of this type of weapon would have been to flex around the edge of a shield or hard points in armor in order to strike a more vulnerable area. Maybe testing the whip sword against a barrier and target representative of the shield/armor used by period accurate opponents the weapon could have faced.

It's really seems stupid and the point of a whip was like to be non lethal and basic if you have access to all that type of metal and material I don't see the point in it why wouldn't you just make a f****** sword it's not really fast it's not really you can't really block a sword or any type of attack the only thing I can see being useful for is like f****** up some slave or somebody that's unarmed and not expecting combat and even then I'd rather just have a regular whip and sword LOL
