A tip... keep at least a couple of feet of flat ground between your dirt piles and the edge of the hole. It keeps things from falling into the hole as easily... (and its actually an osha regulation for that reason)

38:01 stay out from under the bucket when its just hanging there... that barrel full of dirt you have been worried about crushing you might be heavy but not as heavy as that backhoe bucket, boom, stick and hydraulic cylinders are... look up excavator hydraulic failures and you will see why not to be below the bucket.

If you really want to speed up this kind of work, rent a vacuum truck for a couple days. It'll make short work of moving loose, dry soil and gravel. ANd yeah, GREASE YOUR EQUIPMENT!! That thing sounds like it's in pain.
