Great Build! I To Know The Struggles of Redesigning a BBQ Pit, Definitely Not as Easy as it Looks. Came Out Looking Perfect!

I noticed you had the lighter sitting on that shelf when you first got it and I was saying to myself "I don't think you should leave that there."
@BigBull_CDN Says:
oil you cook top, treat it like a cast iron pan (even though it isn't actually cast iron) and it will "season" to both prevent rust and food sticking.

Hey Matt, looks like a great build! I’ve been watching Jeremy and Chud for years, and it’s great to see you getting into BBQ as well. I think that smoker is going to do great for you!
If you want to tinker with it some more, I do have one suggestion. The heat deflector plate you have between the firebox and the cook chamber, I’d switch the orientation of it. I would have it blocking heat from going farther into the chamber and have it direct the heat upwards. There are a lot of backyard sized pits being made that way now, and they call it a scoop baffle. The heat is going to want to rise, so having the deflector in like you do is just going to move your hot spot towards the middle of the cook chamber. If you put it in so that it’s forcing the heat upwards, you’ll have much less of a hot spot and more usable cooking area.
Anyway, great video, and congrats on making your smoker much better and more usable!
@Wass1967 Says:
I would suggest putting a removable solid rack in the firebox. This way you could move the fire closer to the griddle if you're not smoking or while you're smoking. This way you can heat up your griddle hotter to cook your breakfast, hot dogs, or burgers. Instead of having your fire and coals so far down to try to heat up the griddle. Or, while you're smoking you can grab some coals to put up on it so your griddle is hotter for frying. Plus you can spread the coals out for more even heating of the griddle. And it wouldn't affect your smoker part at the bottom. Just an idea, I am not a smoker person. I've never done it. Alls I've had was gas grills to cook on. I am not an expert but I do come up with a lot of good ideas in my head. it was just a thought because I seen you trying to cook hot dogs on your Cuda rear grill. And the fire was pretty low below the griddle. Just thinking outside the box here. Keep up the great videos, I enjoy all the different style videos. One day you're digging in a cave and the next video you're hosting meatfest. Then you're working on a vehicle, or a house lol Love it all bud! Hopefully you read this.

So the throat needs to be bigger to take care of the meat properly?
@ckizer1876 Says:
Hey Matt! Quick thought…You could’ve used a snap line…or chalk line whatever you call it…just level the line then snap it and it’ll draw a chalk mark straight around the curved surface…Good Luck on the smoker!

Hey Matt, my buddy and me also build a smoker out of an old storage tank we cut of one of the rounded sides and lowered it to about halfway and reattached it with a metal plate covering the upper half, it gives it a really slick design!

The “non functional shelf” is basically “a heatsink” it’s definitely losing heat from it. Idk how much but it’s definitely a bit. If it was me I’d probably up cycle the shelf and relocate it to the main part of the body below the regular shelf

@jdemeter4357 Says:
Could try moving the hot box close to the tank, level it to were you want it. For the magic turn off the lights and grab a flashlight. To find the out line shine the flashlight opposite but in line were you need to mark maybe move the flashlight more behind to get rid of light wash out so the cutting line is more defined. Do that all away around.
@jdemeter4357 Says:
Did you protect your tires ? Ooops
@Blacksockmafia1 Says:
You should have used a cut off wheel to cut the hole on the tank after you took the firebox off.
