When I worked in the Intelligence center of the USS Enterprise CVN-65. I learned how to use Thermite in case the ship needed to be abandoned. Thermite burns even under water. So if you use it to destroy classified materials and equipment it will continue to work even if the ship were to sink. 😮

Watching this gives me architectural ideas for making volcanic or igneous rock. Why pour concrete if you can make hard, durable, molten rock cast in a form to measure, in place so you can have a 1 ton block of stone by mixing tubes of thermite with the recipe for whater rock you want, and as the thermite burns, it melts all the ingredients too so you can get stuff like marble, or feldspar, or make your own bubble-ridden lava stone that's extremely light weight, but just as strong or more so than cement?
I don't know, I'm just making it up as I type. I don't have the geology or chemistry to know how to make whatever kinds of rocks, but, this got me thinking as to how it potentially could be done, like pouring concrete, but molten stone for a stronger stone structure that welds itself into place without any mortar.

It appears to me that the bursts are releases of oxygen in the oxide that fuel further reactions around it? Just a guess. Thermite is used to weld railway joints for seamless rails. The excess aluminium oxide is ground off. Clay is used for the mould. Use magnesium ribbon for ignition. Using thermite inside is natural selection and could win a Darwin Award.

Not only is there gas in between the grains, varying grain size, but the big key of the reaction is that the aluminum is always coated in oxide layer. That oxide layer needs to be dealt with before the reaction can proceed. That's why the mixture itself is nearly inert without hot enough igniter.
When the reaction starts, the distance between the grains causes a delay for aluminum oxide to melt before the reaction can proceed. The oxides themselves are what's initially boiling in the mixture.
