Bought a new pair of shoes with laces too long and was looking on YouTube for how to better tie them. As of now was just doing double usual knot. After a lot of inane vids, was a pleasant surprise to find the OG Veritasium expounding on shoelace knots (with the risk that my hands will forget what they have been doing automatically since decades)

Square knot: Right over left then left over right. The first "over" is equally important as the second.

As a lefty, I’ve been making square knots regardless of which direction I’m facing since I first learned to tie my shoes, pretty sure that’s what I was taught to focus on rather than a specific direction.

Ive done bunny ears up until watching this video. Im 50, lol. I did have a girlfriend 22 years ago who made fun of me for never learning to tie my shoes. Lol. Guess Im slow to change

Welp this explains why my left boot always comes untied first. 😂 I taught myself to tie my own shoes as a child and never knew there was a difference. My kids and grandkids make a square knot with two preformed loops because that was the easiest way for me to teach them. In hindsight I think their teachers were teaching them the granny knot.

What loop are you referencing. You didn’t make a loop.
I know how to tie a square knot: right over left and through, left over right and through (with grannies you just don’t reverse the second step). But hats not a shoe knot. A shoe knot results in two loose ends and two “ear” loops and makes a bow!

I discovered this by myself when I was forty and have been doing it correctly the last 30 years. Until I made the discovery, I'd been making the double knot with the bows to keep them from coming untied. The direction for the bow tie changes dependent on how you tie the first half of the knot; left over right or right over left.

Next video: most of us are tying the initial overhand knot of our shoelaces wrong.... but really, the message should just be tie a square knot, not a granny knot. Also, it is easier to correct the initial overhand knot direction.
