Watch The Quiet American (1958) - CIA agent in 1950s Vietnam orchestrating covert operations under the guise of an economic aid mission.
Using media, radio, and paid celebrities to promote the USA or denounce the USSR became SOP for the CIA in the 70's. There were CIA run news offices in every major city worldwide, and there's a litany of documented Hollywood celebrity and CIA secret collaborations.
By the 80's, every other country was doing the same and heavily relied on state-controlled media to broadcast highly coordinated propaganda to counter other countries propaganda, or try to discredit them - see Operation Infektion.
Now, with instant communications, 24hr news cycles, a device in everyones hand, and titans like facebook and google controlling the content, flow, and distribution... we're sooo beyond "regime change".
