UHMWPE - ie, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, with Dyneema as a brand name, is indeed crazy cool. The shear strength of it is wild, it's beyond Kevlar. You can buy fishing line out of it that holds 100 kilos or more. The Dyneema rope here must be capable of hundreds and hundreds of kilos.

@InservioLetum Says:
@Joerg : why not just anchor all the loops at a central post between the two grooves? Pairing each loop with its twin on the other side and alternating them so it becomes rightloop-leftloop-rightloop-leftloop stack on the post, would make the net force compressive instead of shear, eliminating the need for reinforcement. The load would be carried by the grooves like the bridge on a violin, while the central anchor would effectively balance the tension of all the loops with their twin on the opposite side, while still allowing every loop to flex and move independently.

@SupLuiKir Says:
I thought this was going to be a specialized crossbow that is carefully designed to allow you to abuse a loophole in the 'duty to retreat' laws to allow you to legally just shoot the crossbow right away.

Maybe talcum powder could reduce friction from the bands rubbing together and preserve more power? Not oil though, it seems that erodes rubber.
All those rubber bands remind me of muscles. Apparently the strength of a muscle is proportional to the surface area of its cross-section, and a circle has the smallest perimeter and largest surface area, so cylindrical rubber cords should be more powerful and stack more densely, but would ruin the spirit of it being made with "rubber bands".
@yaykruser Says:
Kinda reminds me of the Talisman Crossbow ...
@bowldweller Says:
this is basically a hand-held ballista at this point.
