All my decades as a Christian and this cannot and has not be reconciled. I see cop out answers that are used to justify something you don't understand and cannot explain away. It is the escape hatch answers that tells me even you people do not have the answer.
People say he doesn't make mistakes. He regretted us. Wanted to wipe us out except Noah was the one person he could not do it to. You do not regret unless you recognize you messed up. He did. He made a mistake. Simple as that.
So, while I agree that he doesn't just knee jerk react and go after people for nothing, I do not agree with the answer because there are "innocent" people aka children and others such as some of Job's family who were allowed to be killed, or those who he killed himself.
There is a lot of sugar coating by us. You know why? Because there are issues we do not understand. Making room to fit that in your belief system so you do not have to deal with it is willful ignorance. Question these things. Someone you talk to wanting to share salvation has. Next, the flood. Granted, all humans suck and he wants to start over. Okay, fine. Why does he kill them by drowning? He is all powerful, is he not? I'd be happy about the fact that the flood could have never have happened, that would make things easier.
Like, Guys, believe in whatever God or gods you want, you probably live in a free country. Just don't try to make the storys of some random tribespeople work as some sort of absolute Truth. What's so hard about accepting that humans messed up, as always?

1. God in Bible commanded Saul to kill men, women, children and nursing babies for their forefathers sins in 1 Samuel 15:3.
2. God commanded Moses to kill women and their sons in Numbers 31:17.
3. The Bible says rapist has to marry their victim in Deuteronomy 22:28-29.
4. The Bible says you can sell your daughters as slaves in Exodus 21:7.
5. Jesus said kill children who curse their parents in Matthew 15:4.
Jesus called that non-jewish woman a dog in Matthew 15.24-26 and Mark 7;26-27 for being a non-Jew.

It's important to remember that Noah's Ark, Jonah and the Whale and Sodom and Gomorrah are not historical events. They are cautionary tales of what happens to the wicked. Similar to the Boy who Cried Wolf.
Folk tales are often grafted onto historical characters, like George and the cherry tree.
By studying comparative mythology we can better interpret the Bible and differentiate the allegorical from the historical.
