Explaining USB: From 1.0 to USB4 V2.0

????

USB connectors and specifications tutorial, including USB 1.1, USB 2.0, USB 3.2, USB4 Version 1.0, and USB4 Version 2.0. Video also covers USB DP (DisplayPort), USB PD (power delivery), as well as the USB Type-A, Type-B, Mini-B, Micro-B, USB-C and nine other connectors. :) Information for this video was primarily sourced from specifications included in the Document Library made available by the USB Implementers Forum at: https://www.usb.org/ Inevitably, as always, I've had to decide what to leave out, as well as what to include. Given the number of USB specifications and revisions that exist -- for example, there have now been 17 just for power delivery -- the only sure way to check anything for certain is to look at the instruction manual or online specification for your particular device. This said, right now, if you need the highest specification, go for a device with USB4 ports, and purchase USB power cables that support 100W -- or 240W if you can get hold of them. :) If you enjoy this video, you may like my episodes: Explaining SSDs: Form Factors, Interfaces & Technologies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXLfErPEYiw Explaining PCIe Slots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrXwe21biJo Explaining File Systems (NTFS, exFAT, FAT32 & more): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h30HBYxtws Explaining SD Cards (2020 Update): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLQ8A_vcBqU For additional ExplainingComputers videos and other content, you can become a channel member here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbiGcwDWZjz05njNPrJU7jA/join More videos on computing and related topics can be found at http://www.youtube.com/explainingcomputers You may also like my ExplainingTheFuture channel at: http://www.youtube.com/explainingthefuture Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 01:09 Connectors & Specifications 01:48 USB Chronology (inc USB 1.1 & USB 2.0) 04:32 USB OTG 05:25 USB 3.0 07:38 USB Confusion (USB 3.1 & 3.2) 10:00 USB DP (DisplayPort) 10:23 USB4 11:41 USB PD (power delivery) 13:37 Wrap #USB4 #USB-C #USB3.2 #ExplainingComputers

Cables are now starting show the charge and data speeds on the plug. i.e "18W 5 Gbps" for a standard USB-A former 3.0 cable, or "240W 40 Gbbs D" for a USB-4 cable with display support. I have seen the same on brand new motherboards.

I can't wait until all the legacy ports are eliminated as well as the slow speeds. USB-C all the things!!!!😅

I hate how we have USB cables these days that support charging at like 50gigawatts of powah!!! and which are still limited to data speeds of only 480mbps. Lol. 😅. Yes I know they are intended for different cases but still. Lol

TL;DW: USB started out with two connector types: USB-A for computers and mice, and USB-B for printers. Later they came out with mini-USB connectors and USB-3, which used high-speed blue USB-A connectors. Everything they came out with after mini-USB and before USB-C was misguided, obsolete garbage. After way too much bullshit, they came up with USB-C, which actually works as advertised, end of story.

My key takeaway is this: humans want smaller USBs (to save space in their devices) with bigger bandwidths. Hence the not so universal Universal Serial Bus

Did you know that the USB 3 version is called USB 3.2 Gen 1 today not 3.1 Gen 1? The table on the video is slightly wrong or outdated. Also the Wikipedia article on USB has a nifty SVG graphic explaning the retcons, lol, your video is handy however if one is no the reading type, which many aren't nowadays sadly! Aso on the USB hardware article on Wikipedia there's even a nifty colors table!

There is one more absolutely cursed connector called Mini USB-B 3.0, I only have one device that uses it and it's a external IDE 2.5, IDE 3.5, and Sata tool I got, I thought I've seen everything.

Why not start using other colors instead of blue for each new specification & speed.

Awesome explanation! Do u happen to have a similar video for Thuderbold, potentially including differences: Thunderbold vs USB. Like usb polling in cpu vs DMA used in Thuderbold?

I can't understand who and how can accepted the idea to put several watts power delivery into this tiny little contacts. I saw my collegaue daugther macbook's connector, the contact pads disappeard. Same winth my ipad and iphone lightning connector, almost same size contacts. You cant use as much of them to be enough to handle these ampers.

Its so interesting that we once thought host and component plugs had to be different. Like for no reason at all we couldnt have a universal reversible cable that could plug into both. Its just odd that thats how we started from. I woulda been so much simpler to just make usb-a to usb-a. A and B are so similar in size

I've never been this enthralled by what is in essence a boring slide presentation about a topic I mostly know already. If ever there was a Platonic ideal for an informative and well paced presentation it is this video. Great work and definitely very valuable for someone who hasn't grown up watching all this unfold while working in IT. Great work!

Great video! If you make an updated video, please include clarification for people who don't understand the difference between a bit and a byte. This one got me for so long. Thinking a would be able to transfer a 10GB file in a second 😂

Can we lease get a legal body to regulate good minimum standards for USB cable construction then.
