Explaining USB: From 1.0 to USB4 V2.0

????

USB connectors and specifications tutorial, including USB 1.1, USB 2.0, USB 3.2, USB4 Version 1.0, and USB4 Version 2.0. Video also covers USB DP (DisplayPort), USB PD (power delivery), as well as the USB Type-A, Type-B, Mini-B, Micro-B, USB-C and nine other connectors. :) Information for this video was primarily sourced from specifications included in the Document Library made available by the USB Implementers Forum at: https://www.usb.org/ Inevitably, as always, I've had to decide what to leave out, as well as what to include. Given the number of USB specifications and revisions that exist -- for example, there have now been 17 just for power delivery -- the only sure way to check anything for certain is to look at the instruction manual or online specification for your particular device. This said, right now, if you need the highest specification, go for a device with USB4 ports, and purchase USB power cables that support 100W -- or 240W if you can get hold of them. :) If you enjoy this video, you may like my episodes: Explaining SSDs: Form Factors, Interfaces & Technologies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXLfErPEYiw Explaining PCIe Slots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrXwe21biJo Explaining File Systems (NTFS, exFAT, FAT32 & more): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h30HBYxtws Explaining SD Cards (2020 Update): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLQ8A_vcBqU For additional ExplainingComputers videos and other content, you can become a channel member here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbiGcwDWZjz05njNPrJU7jA/join More videos on computing and related topics can be found at http://www.youtube.com/explainingcomputers You may also like my ExplainingTheFuture channel at: http://www.youtube.com/explainingthefuture Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 01:09 Connectors & Specifications 01:48 USB Chronology (inc USB 1.1 & USB 2.0) 04:32 USB OTG 05:25 USB 3.0 07:38 USB Confusion (USB 3.1 & 3.2) 10:00 USB DP (DisplayPort) 10:23 USB4 11:41 USB PD (power delivery) 13:37 Wrap #USB4 #USB-C #USB3.2 #ExplainingComputers

Its so interesting that we once thought host and component plugs had to be different. Like for no reason at all we couldnt have a universal reversible cable that could plug into both. Its just odd that thats how we started from. I woulda been so much simpler to just make usb-a to usb-a. A and B are so similar in size

I've never been this enthralled by what is in essence a boring slide presentation about a topic I mostly know already. If ever there was a Platonic ideal for an informative and well paced presentation it is this video. Great work and definitely very valuable for someone who hasn't grown up watching all this unfold while working in IT. Great work!

@contactrpg5936 Says:
Why say 80 GBit per s is 600 GByte per minute? Much clearer to put it as 10 GByte/s
@LawpickingLocksmith Says:
USB means Upper Side Band. Theft has resulted in a mess.

Great video! If you make an updated video, please include clarification for people who don't understand the difference between a bit and a byte. This one got me for so long. Thinking a would be able to transfer a 10GB file in a second 😂

Can we lease get a legal body to regulate good minimum standards for USB cable construction then.

The USB 4 standard is insanely over powered. Insane data tranfer speeds, audio and high resolution video supported. Pretty much every connector possible in one.
@JohnDavidSullivan Says:
Coming back to this video just to vent my frustration. I'm sure I'm not the only one - Chris you alluded to it in the video. I was actually unaware there was a USB4v2 until recently, can't wait for USB 4v2 gen 2 😏. So I work as an AV technician in the IT department at a London university, I can't emphasise enough the frustration with the USB standard, when my boss and I had to setup meeting pods and getting USB devices to work with USB C and the power delivery with managed Lenovo laptops was an absolute nightmare, basically because the contractors had installed the wrong spec USB C that were incapable of providing enough power to be used with the laptops we had provisioned. We had to add our own setup using kit from amazon and tell staff not to use the ones that were in situ.

@placeholder3853 Says:
For something so universally used as well USB, the naming really is a mess. Renaming the standards was possibly the silliest thing they did, and the worst part is it wasn't even remotely necessary.

could you perhaps give me a source for your power over usb facts? I've been having some high power draw notifications on my phone from a connected nvme enclosure and it would seem that my S23 Ultra USB3.2 type c power only gives 5v900ma ? :( not enough to power the 5.4W nvme drive.

This is such a severely underrated video! I personally can't think you enough for this one. I've always scratched my head as to why the nomenclature went the way it did. Sometimes I think it was done on purpose because a few people wanted to be a**holes. People have done worse for less. 🤷‍♂️
