The problem with Linux is that, outside of enthusiasts and people who are into computers for their own sake, an operating system is supposed to work for you — not make you feel like you’re working for it. On top of that, Microsoft Office and Adobe are still the de facto standards for productivity and creative work. Until Linux has those apps, it’s always going to stay a niche OS.

Why do you ask WHY someone would or should switch to Linux. Have you ever considered that we have our reasons and that is why we are here. It's hard as hell to get started and I thought you would help with that. Seems like your just trying to tell us ABOUT linux. Why don't you say that in your title so I would not have bothered watching this video.

I can't get rufus to work. It does nothing and will not let me input anything. When I installed rufus it shows e drive . I don't have an e drive just usb d drive.
@petetaylor9758 Says:
Just for interest, should you activate the Linux firewall, and/or install antivirus? I know Linux is deemed to be safer than Windows, but I'd guess nothing is perfect.

Great computer skills in making this video.
@teszYou Says:
There is no any reason to swith to Linux ever. Unless Linux is specifically needed for some specific tasks wher it shines. There is no worse idea than trying to replace Windows in case of average users. I say this after using both systems for around 30 years.

I switched from Windows to Bazzite a couple of months ago. Most of the time, I cannot tell the difference. However, I've still not set up my wireless printers or my scanner because my unfamiliarity with Linux presents itself as quite the hurdle at this early stage. I would not know quite what to do with a fancy RGB keyboard or mouse; it's not as though I can just download drivers and install them. Most people who explain this sort of thing have forgotten what it is like when this is all new, leaving the rest of us with more questions than answers.

I appreciate the video, but it's likely too advanced for true "beginners" who've used Windows computers all their lives and don't know all the terminology and abbreviations the host is using.

Why doesn't anyone ever mention the Opera browser. It runs great on Linux and II use it to watch moves due to the included Lucid sharpening feature/mode which is fantastic. Makes most older movies look like high definition versions!

Yet another well-organized, thoroughly explained, relevant-for-the-times, computer topic. As a long-time Windows user happily running Windows 7 on an aging 16-year old Dell desktop, but whose browser choices are dwindling as bank companies require the latest versions of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox for access, am looking for alternatives. Based on my motherboard specs, now it's either Windows 10 or Linux. This video will help me in my decision-making process.

Which hardware components work best with Linux - or alternatively, which ones do not?
@Randy-m7h8s Says:
Last week I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon over Windows 11. To my surprise everything went smoothly. Linus installed all of my drivers, found all of my monitors and everything worked just fine. My initial concern was smooth access to my brokerage and credit union accounts. They were immediately recognized and I could transfer money between the accounts normally. At that point I relaxed. I have three monitors and it only to a few minutes to configure them the same as they were under Windows 11. Linux Mint makes it much easier to move the cursor from screen to screen. I am really impressed with my easy move to Linux. If I wasn't almost 80 old, I'd jump up and down with excitement.
@jimsacra346 Says:
An additional advantage of using Linux, that of leaving Microsoft dominance should be noted!

Until Linux addresses its main shortcomings the os will remain impractical for the vast majority of Apple and Windows users.
Reliable drivers for every device that Windows and Apple users take for granted. Not being able to use numerous hardware peripherals, software incompatibilities, and the lack of industry-standard software availability for Linux are deal breakers.
Over and above those essential features is a consistent UI experience. Multiple OS variants massively complicate matters.
In the real world big business relies on hardware and software standards coupled to tried and tested enterprise solutions. This largely removes personal choice.

There are 7,492,518 videos on switching from Windows to Linux, but precious little on switching from macOS to Linux. I always knew I was really different! I think I'll take the advice of @4Darius and "... buy a cheap laptop and just try to use Linux in parallel." I started in computing punching 80-column cards with assembly language, so everything is fun to play with.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. I primarily want to move to Linux on my desktop Win 10 PC because I'm not going to throw £2500 of gaming computer away and buy another one just because Micro$haft says so to run their new OS.
If I can run my X-Plane 12 flight simulator and all the add-ons in Linux I will be a Happy Bunny.
But first I will try if on an old laptop that persistently fails to boot to Windows, using the USB method.
I liked your presentation and delivery, so I liked and subscribed.

After WIN10's EOL the other week I have installed Zorin OS onto 3 laptops but dual boot as you explained in another youtube, onto seperate HD's. My biggest problem seems to be seeing the NAS on my home network, still not happy with it and can not find out why so far. I can see the routers fine. I chose Zorin OS 18 after watching your recent videos. Anyway thankyou Chris for all your excellent informative youtubes.
