For current Linux Mint users, instructions for how to upgrade were released a few hours ago (so sadly could not be included in this video). They are here: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4732 Linux Mint 22 does now seem very stable. But waiting a little to upgrade remains wise . . . :)

Linux Mint come with a utility app named "Disks" that can be used to "View, modify and configure disks and media." It also lets you benchmark your disk and shows a graph of read and write speed. I have been using it to benchmark SD cards to see if name brand cards are really better than generic cards with very interesting results.

Looks like it wants you to apply the updates.

I have Mint with cinnamon desktop on one of my laptop's and have always liked mint but recently I have become slightly obsessed with the Debian based MX and it's more lightweight sister distro AntiX 23 which I have installed on most of my systems.

Hello, I would like to thank you for such a wonderful video, This is one of the best channels i have come by in a while, but i have a question. I just watched your Zorin OS video and now I have a question, I understand Zorin OS is light weight and so is Linux Mint but how light weight is Zorin OS and does it give you the flexibility of of Linux mint My Specs are very low :) 4gb RAM 64 GB RAM includes storage (emmc) intel celeron 1.1 GHz integrated graphics Please suggest on of the two LinuxMint cinnamon or Zorin OS Thank you very much for your time.

I recently got my Beelink SER4 4800U Mini PC back up and running. Two years after having used Windows 11 on my system, the OS has succumbed to permanent BSOD’s with every reboot and all subsequent reinstalls have completely stopped detecting the internal Wi-Fi card. I’ve ultimately given up on Windows 11 and switched to Linux Mint, which detected the internal Wi-Fi card right out of the box. Fortunately, this wasn’t my first time using Linux in general. For my Linux Mint installation, I created and mounted the / and /efi partitions on my primary 1TB NVMe SSD, and the /home partition on my secondary 2TB SATA 2.5” SSD.

I'll probably be a Mint user once I'm done with college. I'm only one semester from graduation, and after that I'll break my Windows shackles.

Why do my flashdrives all instantly turn into read only mode after downlading LM and using balena ? Turned all into useless flashdrives. All ways to undo the read only mode failed too btw. It is impossible fo rme to downlad Linux without this happening.

I installed Linux Mint Mate on an old Toshiba notebook and while it was here with me the wifi worked fine, but when a relative of mine took it home the wifi icon simply disappeared. What now? He wants to use it via wifi and can't.

Downloaded now...I am hoping this is the Linux distro that works out for me. I have tried Ubuntu several times over the years and it always ends up in the same stalemate...it 'almost' works. There always seemed to be some minor detail or some specific program that I needed to work that has some slight issue, and therein lies the nightmare of non-guru Linux users...there are so many small variations and changes over the years that it can consume hours digging through forums and how to's trying to find what is the same exact problem and version/context/variant in order to figure out even relatively small issues. I am pretty decent at computers (knew Win 98/Me systems and troubleshooting pretty solidly back in their day), but I just don't have that kind of time anymore to work on the finer points of learning Linux to that level of detail. It's always some stupid old oscilloscope program, or datalogging program that I need to use with some weird graphic glitch in the Linux version on my specific hardware that makes it unusable and becomes an impossible rabbit hole to troubleshoot...and the time economics always end up pushing me back to slugging it out with win10 because it...just...works....

I have always disliked linux distros. I find them convoluted to setup and awkward to use. That said, I bought a second hand mini PC with horrific specs just to play around with and linux mint makes it seem like a Hell of a lot better of a machine than it is. It's a very snappy OS and feels really comfortable and charming to use, which is a nice change from Windows (although I still doubt I'll ever use linux as my daily driver).
@IronDruids Says:
Fyi I tried this and when I pulled the USB stick and restarted normally bitlocker wanted a recovery key because changes had been detected. So if you're doing this you may need something else like a phone to access the internet and get the recovery code from Microsoft. I'm glad my phone had my Microsoft password saved. That was almost a big oops since my password manager was currently locked lol

Cinnamon restricts public adoption of Linux being nerd centric. MATE better for new adopters.

I got Mint installed on my w0 machine but no joy on my Pi 4. Really like Mint on my desktop and would really like it to work on my Pi 4B. Any suggestions? Is there a special distro for Pi 4?

Hi @ExplainingComputers, your brilliant videos have certainly widened my computing horizons and now I find myself running a dual hard drive system with Mint 22 as primary with Windows 10 as second boot (for Memory Map mapping & GPS software). I really rate Mint 22 and am officially hooked. Your channel is one of the few places on You Tube where I am actually learning something useful! Thank you. PS Thanks to the Mint Software Manager I also find myself playing Freedoom and reliving the glory days when I really ought to be updating my accounts using the equally excellent Homebanking program......😁

@eend497 Says:
I can't think of a better OS. Fast, stable, user friendly, powerful. Of course based on Ubuntu, but doesn't reply on those bloated snap packages, and is indeed faster than Ubuntu. I use the MATE version (tried other desktops, but MATE gives me everything I need, has intuitive menu system and is much less RAM intensive than cinnamon (can be lower than xfce).

Dear Mr Barnatt, Having reservations before jumping into Linux Mint. The dilemma? Having to tweak this, or that, with the OS. All I want is a faster machine for one of my old laptops, running Win10 and unsupported for Win 11 upgrade. Is Linux a reliably, tweak-free OS? Thank you so much! Cheers, from Australia

@Rasv- Says:
its HORRIBLE. My laptop can run 4k videos and surf the web at the same time without tripping cpu boost in win11, while in LM22 wilma its a slideshow. runs hot too. N5030

I have followed your instructions for a dual drive dual boot system to the letter and Linux Mint Cinnamon loads from the USB flash drive. Moving the mouse moves the mouse pointer but clicking the left or right mouse buttons does nothing. Also, there is no icon in the top left corner to install Linux Mint onto the hard drive in the PC! Any suggestions are most welcome! This is the first time I have done anything with Linux so I am a complete newbie!

Mint 22 is crap. At least that's my experience. Mint 19.3 worked perfectly ! - Copying files from one external hard-drive to another (both ext4 and mounted) takes forever, and can even lead to a hang up. - "Handbreak" the video converter is slow and also leads to freezing. - The Taskbar is now "grouping" everything and can not changed back to the older "non grouping" version (a lot of people i know have complained about this) - Nividia driver 550 detects 2 monitors, even if there is just 1, leading to a mouse pointer "dead-zone" in the right upper display corner, because that's where the pointer would switch to the second monitor ... again, there is no second monitor ! - and the list goes on ... THIS WAS AFTER A COMPLETELY FRESH INSTALLATION ! Ps.: This is just my own personal experience, so please don't crucify me ! 😇

Everytime I see a video of Linux Mint, I feel like they're a bit behind in the GUI space. The desktop in this video is scaled up, but the fonts and icons arent scaling up very well compared to the other distros. Also, there's no wayland support, which is a deadlbreaker for people who have hidpi displays, because they wouldn't be able to do per-monitor scaling very easily.
@landtuna3469 Says:
After 4 attempts to install Linux Mint on an older Windows PC I was finally successful BUT with the following caveats: 1. Installation is slower than hell. Took an average of 3 hours each. 2. Installation directly to an SSD was never successful. Install process just looped. Had to revert to a HDD. 3. Install goes into blank mode and provides no visual update of progress. No notification of completion. 4. Make sure install is run without USB hubs/switches. Won't work. They do work once install is complete. My jury is still out on Linux/Mint. Not impressed so far. If the idea was to provide an easy method of user conversion from Windows it has failed.
