Question: how do I now update the OS to Ubuntu now that I have raspberry Pi 5 booting from nvme drive?
@stevenwolf8697 Says:
I'm not sure what's going on. I followed everything in the video, up to where you reboot and then type lsblk (timestamp about 7:16), but the nvme isn't showing up. I cannot figure out why..
@Error-User_Not_Found Says:
My txt says: dtparam=ic2_arm=on Dtparam=spi=on What do I do? Edit these files? I tried adding what you showed at the bottom of the text file. No go.

Great video! Learned a lot and am sure it will help me start my next to arrive RB Pi5 quick question.. is the micro SD or can I perform the initial setup with an USB3 pendrive? Thanks again!
@garychios Says:
This was a very good video. As of today 04-26-2024, running this on the most recent Pi software, it works well. I had to change to a Crucial gen 4 drive to make things work though. In addition, the config.txt file is under boot/firmware/Config.txt
@kaffeetasse2461 Says:
if i mount the ssd, can i install the raspios on the ssd instead of the sdcard? can i remove the sdcard then? or is the ssd then only a second drive?

have u guys heard that new radxa nio is releasing with mediatek genio processor
@Terence-mk9jh Says:
Thanks for this excellent video. I have just ordered a Pi5 and the Argon NEO 5 M.2 NVME Case so these instructions are perfect.

Can you review the LATTEPANDA MU.
@KevinKnox-vk6qg Says:
Hello, I have the setup you have, why does the fan run all the time?
@TitoLukason Says:
Tada! Raspberry pi more, Eben is the same as Elon and Jeff, just money greed... Tada!
@PinkAxolotl23 Says:
Do you have to do the configuration and operation step?
@seancondon5572 Says:
I've actually acquired one of these NVMe adapters. I'll have to see what I can do about getting 4 pieces of acrylic cut to about 75x100x(2~2.5)mm to fit the bottom of my DeSalvo Pi5 Galactic cases. Custom-cut the rest of it, and then I can mount this to the bottom of my case. I already have 4 50mm pcie cables being shipped to me. The one it came with was simply too tight a fit. I'll be testing it with the 256GB NVMe SSD that came with my Dell Optiplex Micro that I got some 8 months ago. Sidenote, don't EVER buy one of those, it is the DEFINITION OF PAIN trying to find memory for it.
@golf-n-guns Says:
Can anyone recommend a case that accommodates a RP5 with the active cooler and the Hat Drive Bottom?
@luigiprovencher8888 Says:
I had no choice but to use the pimoroni as a HAT because I wanted to use it with the official raspberry pi case and still have access to the SD card slot. I didn't like how the cable obstructed the SD card slot and the cable was little short and so were some of the screws that came with it so I just ended up ordering the longer cable from them and mounted it on top but the pi case also had to be modified to get the Pimoroni to work as a base. I ended up having to cut a slot in it to get it to work as a base to accommodate the PCIE cable.
@tinkerman9224 Says:
I guess I have to format the drive ? When I type lsblk nothing comes up ?
@DigiDriftZone Says:
Are there any reasonable quality cases that have integrated passive cooling and space for this hat? :)

Does the SD Card Copier resize the root partition to the maximum disk size ?

FYI, Long-time watcher and subscriber! YT's "ALGORYTHMS" decided I shouldn't be a member, or something... I've been hearing that a LOT lately! Apparently, their bots aren't working so well! Keep up the great work and reminding people to MAKE SURE they're still subscribed! ;)
@67comet Says:
Whoop .. Much faster than the SD card. I have the same board, but did not have to edit my config.txt file (it also moved to /boot/firmware/config.txt) .. When I was hooking it up (before watching your video) I was wondering what they were thinking making such a short cable right over the SD card slot. I may buy a longer cable, and do some creative routing to get easier access to the SD card slot (I want to use my Micro SD to SD adapter for my photography work. Good video, thank you for creating it for us.
@markhackney3305 Says:
Very helpful video. Would be great if you could do a walk-through guide on different display options and how to set them up
@markhuggins Says:
Thanks!
@StephanAal-rd3dw Says:
Excellent video, Chris. It helped me get my Pineberry set up....One word of caution though. Copying the SD card to the NVMe can be risky. When I tried doing it there must have been some corruption in the SD card which transferred to the NVMe or occurred in the transfer and then it wouldn't boot with the NVMe installed. I had to remove everything from the NVMe disk (Not easy, needed to use an Android phone and a M2/USB C adapter to do it). Started again with a new SD card and version of raspbian. Once it was up and running on that, used imager to load a new Raspbian onto the NVMe drive....now works a treat. .... and you need to update /boot/firmware/config.txt now to insert the dtparam values, not /boot/config.txt Thanks for this video ... and all your other work, too. ☺
@abzs5811 Says:
Can I ask why does he keep mentioning the SD card if he’s got an NVME M.2 SSD I don’t get it Can someone explain please!!
@snybe Says:
Is there anyway to use a headless Raspberry Pi 5 and copy the boot sector off the Micro SD card onto the SSD from the prompt?
@Rushil69420 Says:
I flashed the Raspberry PiOS onto a microsd and updated all packages prior to following along - I was getting "command not found" when trying to test the drive speed until I manually installed the necessary hdparm packages [sudo apt-get install hdparm]. Everything went smoothly from there. Did this with the Geekworm x1002 M.2 hat, although coincidentally the same Crucial P3 Plus drive.
@ronaldhofman1726 Says:
Nano is CTRL+O for write and CTRL+X for exit that's the right order.
@ronaldhofman1726 Says:
mine at gen 2 is same Crucia P3 plus nvme gen 4l is 400, not bad
@ronaldhofman1726 Says:
I just see that the commands are dtparam=pcie1_gen2=1 , but the argon40 manual states that it is dtparam=pciex1_1=gen3, that's not correct then
@ronaldhofman1726 Says:
The PICEx is not certified for gen3, it must work in gen 2, yersterday i installed Ubuntu 23.10 in the Pi 5 and the SSD is almost 500 mb speedtest, but that's fast enoughm The NEO5 because is metal casing has impact on the wifi signal , so i connected the ethernet and used Kodi to test the continuitiy of the strream and works fine, In Ubuntu the boot.config is not filled with the rules that must be added , never found it , but it works.
@ronaldhofman1726 Says:
I havw the Neo 5 NVME case works fine, i had ubuntu on it firts but NVME dsoes does not work, then i installed RPI OS and it works , have a Crucial P3+ SSD 1 TB and is siupported and works fine, Pi stays cool in this kind of case, works perfect. i also have a neo 5 case and the SSD part can be ordered separately and can get a ssd for the other one also
@TobeyNord Says:
Looks like they really spent some time and thought into the raspberry pi 5 .
@xDooksx Says:
Rad.
@stoptheirlies Says:
Config.txt is no longer in Boot folder, it's in Boot\firmware\config.txt
@MihaiDobrin88 Says:
u can only do that after u installed the os from an sd card. if u do use pi imager directly on nvme and modify the config file and have no sd card at all it wont work
@1cookgs Says:
Thank you very much for all the good help.
@cheynespc Says:
oh yeaaaahhhhhh TAKE MY MONEYYYYYYY
@flaskdjango6092 Says:
Terrible support, i bough one of them and didn't work, I've tried to send Pineberry multiple emails to different email addresses and no one got back to me. I've ended up buying Pimoroni NVMe Base and it worked first time.
@RF-et2kv Says:
well to bad here do the same but no results, it won't work it's delivered inclomplete and it doesn't work, a wast of time and money
@asuras1 Says:
Hi! Thanks for this perfect and crystal clear video. This is exactly what I did and worked out perfectly fine. The only issue I have since I switched to my nvme ssd as main boot device is, that after a while the SSD gets disconnected - so I can't access my services anymore on this raspberry pi. Seems like some kind of idle mode. If I have an open SSH connection and start working there again, it all comes back without the need of a restart. But before that all webpages are not accessible anymore. Even new SSH connections from remote I can't do. Would appreciate any hints, ideas .... Thanks!
@Da_GrandiMan Says:
Where can I find a USB cable to PCIe Nvme SSD 2280 ? As shown in this Video (fits a Pi5 ? Nvme SSD m.2 key card 2280) I need to kno why my pi can't or does not recognize either of my SSD's, anymore ??? Thx !
@JosWennmacker Says:
I followed your instructions and it all worked like a charm. My SSD was recognised without changing config.txt. I copied my bootdrive with 'dd'. After reboot I found that I forgot to detach the old drive, so I had a mix of both drives. After power down, removing old drive and boot, everything was ok! Thanks!
@pamanes7 Says:
I messed up pretty badly, I forgot to add the line PCI_PROBE=1 and it wouldn't boot, so when I plugged in both the SSD and microSD, the boot was picked up from the microSD card and the OS mounted the SSD's data partition! so I was screwed! I had to add the line, then copy the partition from microSD over to SSD, then reboot without the microSD. I highly recommend you click New UUID's on the SD Copier, otherwise linux will mount both if they have the same UUIDs, thanks.
@jimf5160 Says:
So...is there a good case with a fan that supports bottom HATs?a
@dantevortex Says:
If you run Ubuntu the config file is located in the /boot/firmware directory
@TrudleR Says:
For Raspberry OS Lite, can the SD card copier somehow be used from the terminal or is there maybe an alternative that can do the same stuff equally seamless?
@richardskead1 Says:
its my first time with pi and a node , i have a pi5 i cant make up my mind if i should use a hat and nvme 2tb ssd or a sata ssd 2tb drive what would you think would be best for a btc node , any info much appreciated . thanks
@PeteSnipe Says:
Really useful video. I like the command line text you present with yellow background. I went cheap and bought an MCUzone M.2 Hat. Ribbon cable was a bit fiddly but with a soldering iron to remove the captive nut and a spare cabe tie, all is working well. Best mine has seen is 662.5 MD per second with Gen 3 config enabled.
