There is a third type beside Dry Loose and Wet Loose which can be triggered by dancing in abandoned buildings. It's called Footloose.

6:47 There's another type of avalanche, one where you gotta dance... That's called Footloose.

I don't understand why people ski or surf

Thanks for the video. I will show my son who is interested in snowboarding. Another reference book is, "The Avalanche Handbook" by David McClung and Peter Schaerer, published by, The Mountaineers. Very thorough and covers everything from avalanche formation to safety, rescue, and preventative measures.

This reminded me of how Mulan triggered an avalanche

Honestly… the quality of this channel just never disappoints. I think it’s probably the best channel on YouTube.
@azdaze227 Says:
So you are telling me, that people actually get paid to ski over to a spot and then set off an explosive to cause an avalanche? And sometimes they ride in helicopters and just chuck the explosives out the window? Where do I sign up? Edit: and now I get to the part about literally shooting mortars at it. I wanna go to war with snow, I don't even care that I'm from the desert and terrible with cold, I will be the new creator of avalanches, the spawner of snowslides if you will.

Awesome video. Really great knowledge and aligns with all my avalanche training and the books. I am surprised to the level of detail and accuracy you got into this video. Seriously bravo! Only nuance is the airbag doesn't actually increase bouyancy (or at least it isn't characterized this way), it is a principal of granular convection, where larger particles settle to the surface, kind of like if you had stones and sand in a jar and shook it, the sand would filter to the bottom. An interesting phenomenom in itself, which I guess may be considered buoyancy.

Nice thanks 🙏🏻

Crossing the sloop is a big no-no! If going down potential dangerous terrain, one should make very tight turns.
@SL1PPY_SH4RK_ Says:
I’m going to be honest, I thought avalanches just happened because there was just too much snow… I didn’t know there was this many variables to it

Whistler and Blackcomb are also Windows code names, and there’s a bar called longhorn in between, that is also a Windows code name 😂
@simpledj509chromo7 Says:
I've triggered a few sluffs in my day and it's not a good feeling. We really don't have terrain steep enough aside from Execution to trigger an actual slide. But ski patrol stays on top of that run because it could slide given the right snow conditions. Stay safe out there everyone. Carry a beacon, a probe, a shovel (at minimum), and get avi training if you're going into a zone where an actual slide may take place. I'd rather drink a beer with you than talk to someone and buy you a beer after your passing.

It is sad to see that in this video self organized criticality, sandpile model and power laws are not examined which are really related with avalanches. Can consider doing a follow up in this respect.
@JuiceBoxScott Says:
Isn't powder mountain a larger ski area? Seems like a pretty simple unforced error by a fact based channel.

In the past, I often thought that people who looked pranky and deliberately made avalanche were stupid people. Now I regret it because they actually did preventive things.
@xiaoranfan9804 Says:
20:07 what’s the purpose of a shovel if you have a flamethrower or grenades or a blowtorch?
@GuidoHaverkort Says:
Very interesting how the more angular crystals are the ones that don't stick together. With soil it's the opposite, the round ones are loose and the more angular granules make a sturdier soil. Does anybody know why that is?
@murdo_mck Says:
"For a long time, skiers who ventured up Conundrum Creek in winter were regarded as crazy fools." - Lito Tejada-Flores. A V shaped valley in Colorado's backcountry which is prone to powder snow avalanches. They come down one side of the valley at 200 mph and stop as they go up the other side. The best (only) survival technique is to be somewhere else.
