I do not consider SBC more expensive than $100 for 8GB. So only one board in the list is qualified.

Excellent video! His wish came close to being fulfilled: now there is the excellent SBC Orange Pi 5, with RK3588, priced between US$ 100 and US$ 110, for the 4 GB version. Perhaps it will replace the Raspberry PI in terms of cost/benefit.

Because of the shortages I have mainly been buying older boards that were available. Such as Pi 2 or even the infamous AtomicPi. I have to say the AtomicPi is still a very usable SBC.

I don't understand the Latte Panda. You can buy the same intel chip in smaller form factors with a case for far cheaper with windows included (like half the price lol!) and just plug a Arduino nano into it for the exact same outcome.

I just dusted off my original raspberry pi and loaded it up with a headless OS. Even though it's 10 years old you can still do a lot with it on the command line. Have you thought about doing a video about using a "headless" computer? It might be a fun topic, and it's accessible for many people because you can use any raspberry pi/cheaper SBC.

Pardon my ignorance, but my fear with these ARM and Risc-V alternatives to the RPis is future software support and availability: how can I be sure that future updates will keep comming? Will future kernels still be compatible with the hardware? Will their communities still exist and develop? In that regard, while not a certainty, RPis seem too big to loose support. From an OS point of view, can we use for example Raspbian (compiled for the RPi) in the Rock 5B? That would be a relief. I'm somewhat talking from experience because I have used Linux desktop distros that eventually dissappeared, and the SBCs ecosystems look even more fragile given their niche market.

Thank you for the recommendations. The challenge, I find, is the lack of support - I don't want to run a beta OS on an SBC and deal with stability issues. The Raspberry Pi's quality and level of support so far hasn't been met by any of the SBC makers. The thing is the lack of availability for Pi's till sometime in 2023 will kill the Pi's advantage as people are getting tired of waiting. It opens the door for these competitors to get their software updated and more people will invest money into small companies. The Pi foundation's focus on Industrial partners should also show up in their marketing, as they are no longer the friendly choice for hobbyists, education, and what used to be their biggest fans.

I have a Renegade Elite from Libre Computers and would like to see what you think of this board as it comes from Libre Computer and what you think are necessary accessories. What you get is just the SBC without anything else. I am especially interested in how to make use the eMMC 5 module that is supposed to be on the board.

The Orange PI 5 is available for pre-order from Ali Express and Amazon in some countries until Nov 30. It has the RK3588S chip. That chip has less features than the regular RK3588 but I couldn't see anything that I would miss. CNX Software has a blog post about the differences. RAM - 4,8,16 GB options - no emmc right now but they say it will be available in the future.

Might be worth to look back when 888 888 has been reached cause all these look back mile stones bring usually more subs then other videos cause in these best of summaries the not subscribed viewers learn there how much they might have missed and let them subscribe easier.
Remember : the fun and entertainment expecation to subscribe yet another channel must be far bigger then the fear of all the addtional notifications coming
Yes, you do just 1 video per weeks usually adn you are luckily not part of the short wave that first lets me warn the channel and then unsubscribe, so you are not part of the wave but each time I wanna press subscribe I also think about the amount of notifications about content I will not like. This is the big battle behind which many channels are struggling to break through, more joy than risk.
And you do not enough look backs or summaries, some times a channel update, but the best 3 videos or topics of the last quarter as a management summary or teaser might be worth to considering to get a bit of the channel growth back. Yes, you might repeat content, but you also help regular viewer or subs that had missed some videos in the past quarter to get aware of that top content from your channel they had been missing so far unfortunatelly. Maybe even worth a regular sunday video.
I have missed some of your content recently due to building a solar power system with 30 kWp and big battery incl. heatpump, but due to yoiur regular spot on sunday noon videos I usually check your channels VIDEO list for those with no red line below that shows me the missed.
Great channel and just a kind reminder what we have observed here on different channels that ran into the current growth challenge or question. Those that struggle take the main road making shorts and mostly in the wrong way as teaser for tomorrows big hit release.

What I keep looking for: in 5 years, are new distros/and or kernels going to be available for X board? Or will the hardware manufacturer have made 3 new boards in the mean time, forgot about the one I bought, and I'll be left forever with some random kernel they had patches for and a 4 year old Ubuntu/debian?
This is really what has made Raspberry Pi the champion. 3Bs are still infinitely useful today as long as you don't need cutting edge compute power, and it can run all the latest software. It seems maybe some rockchip SoCs might get there, but I believe there's still a lot of work on that front.
In fact it might be a useful video topic for you. Taking a smattering of random "older" SBCs released by different OEMs from various years, what are the latest software they are able to run, and how well does it work?
A dream for the future is that when RISC-V SBCs mature, they'll get a lot better ongoing software support than a lot of the current crop of ARM ones.

One little question about Petitboot. You said, I quote "capable of booting different operating systems on different drives".
