Being a christian is being an imitator of Christ. The first generations of christians were willing to be eaten alive by lions without fighting back.
In letters written by martyrs they were thankful for being given the opertunity to suffer and serve God by sacrificing their life.
This created so much cognitive dissonance in the Roman culture that they came face to face with their own brutality. What used to feel good, slaughtering people screaming for their lives, did not feel good when the christians stood there strong in their belief dying without a word.
Turning the other cheek. Absoorbing hate. I would argue is at the CORE of christianity.

As a young man myself, I think many young men these days absolutely need to be physically fit, practice a martial art, and learn how to handle a gun. But they should always be the last line of defense. If you're in a store and someone starts shooting random people, and you have a concealed firearm on you. If I was in that situation, I would be an absolute coward not to use it. I think it would actually be considered love in a sense to end that threat. These people who are going about their lives and suddenly they're getting their life ended by evil. If I have the ability to stop that evil (even if that means killing) I'm going to absolutely do so out of the love of those other people. That's very different than if someone pushes you or insults you. Obviously almost all of those situations can be avoided, but there are edge cases like active shooters.

I agree but I think "if it's unavoidable" is too strict. When would it be unavoidable? When you are kidnapped? Met in an alley with no way out? Very few circumstances. I think running from conflict as a primary way is also not best. Verbal is not brought up and is important to deescalation. Then there are bullies and abusers who need to be met with force. I'm sure you could run from them but that shows weakness and encourages their behavior.

He was tortured and murdered by the most powerful Empire to exist at that time and yet 300 years later the Roman Empire converted from Pagan Gods to Christ

When the soldier came to arrest Jesus Christ, he did NOT defend himself.
A disciple chopped off one of the soldier's ear, and Jesus Christ healed it.
So, it is pretty OBVIOUS that "self-defense" is NOT a Biblical reason to not turn the other cheek.
There is NO valid and reliable "context" to disregard this command.
It is a direct command from Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ himself was an example of this command
So, do you want to be more like Jesus Christ or you would rather choose the life of the flesh (self-defense)?

Understanding biblical context goes a long way and helps answer questions when verses are picked out like that. The whole of Mathew chapter 5 was Jesus’s interpretation of the Mosaic Law to the Jewish crowd present at the time, He was not addressing the Church because the church had not existed then, it was still future He had not gone to the cross yet. The reason for the sermon on the mount was in contrast to what the Pharisees were teaching with their traditions being overwhelmingly burdensome on the people. In the Law it stated a tooth for a tooth an eye for an eye, judicially the punishment must fit the crime. As for turn the other cheek it’s not speaking of self defence in any way, rather it’s about personal retaliation and seeking vendetta or revenge, It is not God’s way. In those days a slap on the cheek was rather a disgraceful act and one would in most cases look to defend their honour in a duel or seek revenge in some form. The misinterpretation of verses like this has left many believers cornered feeling guilty for something that is read into the passage. Hope this helps. God bless.
