Jesus himself didn't even call himself "good." He asked his disciples why they thought he was "good." God is holy. People are born in a world that is not holy. It's fallen. The closer we get to Christ, the cleaner/ holy we become. Remember, Jesus is like the sun in the sky. You can't get close to it and be like, "I'm good!" Don't burn me!" Doesn't work like that. Genuine question: what is the point of all this? The world's major religion has been built on this premise for 2000 years, and (to me at least) it makes no sense. We were created by an omniscient, all-powerful God who could design humanity any way He chose. He chooses to design us imperfect, and decrees that we have "fallen short of His glory" simply because we're imperfect (roughly paraphrased, we're not good enough because we're human). As if this wasn't bad enough, He attempts to make up the shortfall by reinarnating as a human and sacrificing Himself to Himself for a weekend (how that is supposed to fix things is somewhat mysterious). Even the alternative explanation, that humans _were_ perfect before they ate the fruit of Eden, makes no sense - why would they have chosen to disobey God if they were sinless at that point? Millions of people subscribe to this system, so I'm happy to accept there's just something wrong with me for not getting it, but no explanation I've ever heard has come close to making sense.

The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.
Bear with me. There are 3 factors in this chapter. The wife, the husband and the law.
What does it mean? We know what the law is, but who is the wife and who is the husband?
The wife symbolizes the good nature in us, in our soul. The husband symbolizes the evil nature in us.
The problem is not that we are not good, we are. The problem is that we are also evil.
And to a bigger extent, evil is in charge, just like a husband is the authority in a marriage (old school).
There is a man of sin within each of us who is stronger than the good person we want to be. And no matter how hard we try, we are never able to overcome the sin within.
The law comes to show us our sinfulness. As we try to follow the rules, we realize that we are unable to do so, showing us we are sinners, and no matter how hard we try it only gets worse. Not one of us are strong enough. Why? Because when we sin, we become slaves of sin. We are owned and driven by evil within. What is easy, to be selfish or to be unselfish? The answer is obvious.
What is the solution to our predicament? "But if the husband dies", then we are free. How? How can the evil nature in us be put to death? I cannot kill myself, right?
For those who believe in Jesus as lord and savior, they are included in his death. It is through faith in him we are saved. Not only did he shed his blood for our complete forgiveness, but we are included in his death, through faith. And if I am dead with him, I am no longer under the law (verse 1), I am now under grace. It is in him we live and breathe and have our being.
For those who believe, God gives you his Holy Spirit and he becomes the new boss within. You don't owe the sinful nature anything anymore. It is a daily yielding to God's Spirit.
What is he like? He is kind, warm, patient, joyful, full of love and powerful. Not like our old self at all.
