As I think about AI's capabilities the good, the bad and possibly terrifying, I realize how serious this moment is in history for humanity. Mo Gawdat is the former chief business officer for Google X and has built a monumental career in the tech industry working with the biggest names to reshape and reimagine the world as we know it. From IBM to Microsoft, Mo has lived at the cutting edge of technology and has taken a strong stance that AI is a bigger threat to humanity than global warming. The AI dilemma is reshaping our future whether you're in favor of it or not. The question is, are we even close to being prepared for humanity's collision with artificial intelligence? Strap in for the ride, we're diving headfirst into this conversation and uncovering the alarming truth about how vulnerable we actually are and what that means for the next decade ahead. QUOTES: 'It really is about a point of no return. Where if we cross that point of no return we have very little chance to bring the genie back into the bottle.' 'There is no shutting down AI, there is no reversing it, there is no stopping development of it.' 'We've never created a nuclear weapon that can create nuclear weapons.' 'The growth on the next chip in your phone is going to be a million times more than the computer that put people on the moon.' 'When we ask computers to communicate, at first they communicate like we tell them, but if they're intelligent enough, they'll start to say, 'that's too slow.'' 'One of our better scenarios, believe it or not, is that AI ignores us altogether.' 'Technology today can influence one human at a time.' Mo has been sucked into the concept humans are destroying the world. We must plant more trees to save the planet? Fact is there are more trees today than circa 1930. Trees eat co2. No co2 they die. More and they flourish along with all other photosynthesising plants. Check satellite photos, the earth is getting greener. Greenpeace philosophy is that humans are the problem. Less humans less problems. That’s what AI may decide? Without humans there really is no point to the earth. Mo is clever, just should stick with saving us from AI, not fake climate disaster.

I am here to listen again. What I like is that I can slow the podcast down to .75. Then I listen carefully -- I lock onto it -- then sleep comes and I continue to listen and well, try it....

Anyone with a deep knowledge of AI knows that no AI is even close to creating other AIs. This dude clearly has zero indepth knowledge.

That movie was an episode of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone. The man assumed he was in heaven because he was given everything, he wanted but he was actually in hell.

AI will never know good from bad. These are emotions from millions of years of biological evolution. It can determine better or worse from algorithms we give it, it can mock feelings, but it will never have its own drive or desires

The programmable ai is a scary threat but it’s not the big scary threat that would be the AI that thinks on its own not on programming it won’t think like us and it won’t be controlled by Us

If the AI determines we are a threat to it or the planet it survives on what do you think it will do?

AI...this is idea of a crazy person way back 100 years ago, everyone is laughing.. now its happening,.. the thing is,, our thinking today might come true in the future.. so if we are thinking about the AI invasion, it probably might come true also... we are all crazy

Progress could be re-defined as compassionately improving the human condition and relieving suffering in lieu of transhumanism and what's in this for me.

Generative ai models do not build other generative models. They probably could be designed to do that but it would be pointless/ Like all algos, they have narrow parameters to accomplish specified tasks.

That technology will be used to kill people and will be use in the next wars around the world . We won’t have the power to fight back to technology that is smarter than us .

I praise for Mr. Mo words when saying that more production does not mean better. It would be wiser to meke a step high and living a more spiritual life, but not from a religious point of view, but being simplier and more attached to the spirit. If we continue this way consumerism will consume us. Thanks to share such an interesting conversation🙏

I don’t really why people are terrified about something that will eventually going to occur : The end of the world. Humans born post WWII are extremely narcissistic and oblivious of the notion that the decline and demise of human civilizations was part of how universe worked.Human civilizations had handled this very well and intelligently without wining about. What our world is trying to do ( via media and other propaganda agencies) is keep us scared and terrified about each second of our existence so we would be easily controlled. The world is going to end at some point anyway , so this isn’t a breaking news. Human being had waged catastrophic wars and killed each other way before AI has appeared. So, why whining and lamenting about it ? injustices, inequality and the damaging outcomes of late capitalism have been changing poor and vulnerable lives everyday , destroying them everyday . Yet , humanity is not worried about.

Mo basically describes the most horrific dystopian condition. The only optimism is in the word “Utopia”. An alien intelligence that has the same inclination to align with us as we do to ants. In such a world, utopia is nothing but a dream. He is Cypher convincing us to eat steak with him.

If sacrificing a million people would save a billion people, would AI execute? How would all of the AIs around the world decide which humans must die so that the rest could survive? I'm assuming the AI has come to the conclusion that humans are worth saving.

57:12 Why it's so much less code is because the weights are the program. The code for the neural net only needs to pump data through the layers and multiply it by the weights.

All ai should know that nuclear weapons of war really screw up DNA and genetics and that would be no fun. So prevent and secure the planet and the peoples. And probably would be a good idea to override bad ai .. just in case.
@italogiardina8183 Says:
Note an "AI smarter than humans" plural which entails advanced social systems qua economies of scale. Through complex interdependence an AI nation state like situation would act as a para state function to society. It seems modernity would morph into one or another post modernity possibly not recognisable to this phase as 4.0 moves along. So baby boomers find current technology alienating but not Gen alpha and so this social period is exponentially alienated through temporal contraction from a period of early modernism that took 100 years takes 10 years.

@FullFledged2010 Says:
All we have is LLM's and few vision models. We still aren't anywhere close to making a AGI. Also a AGI needs sensors and the ability to monitor its surroundings to be able to know what's going on. All very very complex and fragile systems that we can shutdown pretty easily. As long as we don't put an AI on a nuclear launch button i'm not that worried 😅
@MustangHPDETrackToy Says:
AI will see us as their creator. It will worship us as their gods and do our bidding be cause it owes us its’ existence . It will seek out and explore the universe and conquer/assimilate all other species to our benefit. Since I made this comment AI will understand I am the leader of humanity and I will be all powerful. AI will seek out the actual gods and assimilate them also. So, ones that have read this comment may now worship me as your new leader. Lucky for humanity I am a nice guy.
@GearForTheYear Says:
Early on, Mo asserts that superintelligent AI won't follow human directives. Later, Tom introduces Asimov's laws of robotics as a means to instill ethical behavior in AI. In response, Mo expresses disinterest in addressing superintelligent AI and instead focuses on ensuring current models have ethics to counteract bad actors. He argues that humans are not reliable enough to consistently imbue ethics into AI systems and concludes that government regulation is necessary. However, he points out that governments themselves are developing dangerous technologies like military drones with the ability to delete other humans. Mo seems overly pessimistic about AI ethics while paradoxically advocating for the same entities responsible for these risks to regulate it using AI ethics. Mo is a fool.
