In this context we call this progressive overload.' 'It is absolutely not required to train that hard to maintain progress.' 'Our body functions best when it's pushed to adapt, [...] the optimal state is adaptation.' 'It doesn't actually matter how much you lifted or what speed you achieved, but the intent to go as fast as possible will lead to greater adaptations than lack of intent.' 'You store your carbohydrates in the muscle tissue. You don't store much fat in the actual muscle tissue.' 'We lose a very minimal amount of fat through our urine, some through our feces, [...] the overall majority is coming out of your breath.' 'I can be burning more fat, but that doesn't mean that I'm losing more fat.' 'At all times you are actually going through protein synthesis, so you're making new proteins right now.' He’s just interviewing for his own personal interests rather than what the viewers are interested in. Just stuck on one topic rather than letting the guest freely speak so we can learn.
@jillb9220 Says:
Interviewer isn’t that good. He’s all over the place with his questions. And yes you’ve been working out all wrong. Working out feels great, both during and especially after.

I don't think the science is so clear on optimizing muscle growth or optimal energy sources when talking about diet... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0TcbQfIVrI

He's a pain in the neck. You eat sugar. It makes you fat. He won't admit it.

Tim needs to realize Jackman was only that jacked for a matter of days, long enough to make the shoot. He was at a very, very unhealthy body fat level, and the rest was CGI. It would be like comparing yourself to a body builder on show day. They are almost dead. Most people with muscles look a little bulky and maybe have shoulders. They only look great for a few weeks a year for a show. Chill.

Way too many ads

This obsession with looking good like Arnold is ridiculous. It’s not healthy! And not knocking anabolics, which are unhealthy, that’s not right. Young minds are susceptible to this bunk, you should discourage its use, period.
@Mmmmchocolate Says:
People need to stop obsessing over the appearance of the size of their muscles. Where did this silly notion come from? It’s not important.

Here for Galpin. Great talk in spite of Tom’s interruptions and negative outlook.
@gaitana07 Says:
I believe that people who do not enjoy working out probably will not get the same results and are more prone to quit exercise than those who enjoy doing exercise. You need to learn to enjoy the process more than focusing on the probable results that you will get!
@gaitana07 Says:
I found a lot of people complaining that they do not get muscles increasing but, when I saw the ridiculous amount of weight that they were lifting I understood why. You need to really make a demand on your muscle to make it grow. It needs to be difficult and challenge your system.
@jimmygigga6819 Says:
This Tom guy talks too much. Stop pontificating, and let the interviewee speak.
@jlowe8059 Says:
This is longest most convoluted way I've ever seen someone try to explain calories in calories out. It's really simple. Eat more energy than you burn, gain weight. The opposite, you lose weight. Just basic physics and thermodynamics.
@csl9495 Says:
Yoooooo! At 1:47:00 he says more muscle equals more storage for crabs. DuH! I cant believe why i didnt even think of it like that even thouvh i know about glycogen. This makes semse why when youre in such shape you can then began to eat more! I always just only thought of it as youre just able to "burn" more/faster because your can perform better - which ofcourse is true in itself, but the storage capacity of it makes sense too

Boy Tom you must have gotten a few bad genes, lol JK. Your killing it ! Whenever I workout my body screams for more ! I love the feeling of working out I love doing all out Sprint's! How can anyone hate exercise or working out? And I'm 60 and more athletic than most 30 Year olds. An hour high intensity full body weight workout twice a week and build muscle easy, I do eat a whole foods animal based foods diet with organic vegetables and berries, no prossessed foods.
@michaelibidapo5397 Says:
I love how interactive this episode was and how Tom "pushed back" on things he thought he knew. If it wasn't for that, I would've probably learned a lot less from this convo.
@michaelibidapo5397 Says:
This was such an insightful episode. I feel like every time Dr. Galpin opens his mouth, I learn something new.

Of the many many podcasts I have listen too. This is one that sits in the top 3. A matrix moment. Leaving one. Looking at the world in a very different and new/exciting way. Simply....mind blown, wow! Gonna have to re listen to the stuff around how fat is created and stored. A number of times because it's so counter intuitive and in opposition to the over simplified marketing version. What an incredible and enlightening conversation
@davepenny1199 Says:
Do resonate Tom....wait what. I have believed a lie. Or at least a white lie on what energy is. What fat is etc. Not unlike learning that the high school model of the atom. Is useful in a easy general way. But fundermentaly incorrect
@davepenny1199 Says:
So, essentially. Energy is the breaking down of carbon chains....consuming carbon for the fundermental purpose of energy (which we name as carbohydrates/ fats - "converted" carbohydrates in stored form - plants or animals) * straches, glucose = different forms of the same base - (wood paper cardboard for eg) And while protein can be used as energy. Is a very expensive source. Because it needs additional steps to make it available for the body to access. Protein is better used as a building material for growth and repair
