I don't understand why, especially with American viewers, they had a mixed view or viewed Suharto as a bit negative. After all Indonesia at that time was fighting for it's independence and sovereignty, just like other colonies and countries fighting off some other empire, just like how America did fight off GB for it's independence and freedom. As far as the dictatorship and autocracy from Suharto is concerned, most of human history autocracy was the norm especially after you win independence from an empire. Democracy is in fact the most recent evolution in governance, and that liberty, liberalism, democracy andhuman rights/freedoms are a luxury most of us descendances are privileged and enjoy from.
And from some basic research and wikipedia, the PKI were not as innocent as this video portrayed them to be, given that they're a communist party which got it's ideas from the Soviet Union, from the USSR, when Stalin was in power. Yes, that USSR which did atrocities as well, which also spread it's ideas to China and inspired Mau's party to do attrocities as well.

Of course Soeharto knew about the communist coup and also his commander in chief Soekarno knew about it, the communist move not against Soekarno but targeting Indonesian military establishment. If the communist succeed their revolution than Soekarno will be the Indonesian version of Mao Ze Dong. Altough Soekarno himself is not a communist, he sympatize and protect the communist and the communist love and idolize him. Soeharto in the other hand is the ultimate opportunist, he simply wait who's got the upper hand in the power struggle. And when the public react against the PKI movement Soeharto make his move, forcing Soekarno to give him power to "restore law & order". First thing Soeharto did is to disolve the communist party, arrested their leaders and systematically eradicated them by imprisonment and large sum just killing them.
