Kidd's problem was that he didn't politic with those crews, by securing blood oaths of alliance "as needed" and for this, the crews demanding piracy would be given a non-flagship vessel, and share new information with trusted persons at particular ports and pubs. He could have easily done this and walked several English ships into a tangled web where one crew would pretend to lay seige on a town just close enough to a major port that any big guns could and would mobilize, but just far enough that their absence would provide the time to sack their larger port and capture a governor. Yes, he could have done much better than a mere commission of a privately built ship it seems.

I don't know if you read these or not, but I found this man Sir Nicholas Winton. It is a tragically beautiful story, I know that you are use to presenting the horrors of the Holocaust, but I think it could be interesting for everyone to see how the actions of one person saved so many lives and he kept it a secret for so long.
