Raspberry Pi OMV 6 NAS

????

OpenMediaVault 6 network attached storage (NAS) software installed and configured on a Raspberry Pi 4, with a drive then mapped on a Windows PC. The OpenMediaVault website is here: https://www.openmediavault.org/ And the install instructions page I showed in the video is here: https://wiki.omv-extras.org/doku.php?id=installing_omv6_raspberry_pi However, the install process I demonstrated in the video, and which I believe is easier for beginners, is to: Download Raspberry Pi Imager from here: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/ User the imager to write Raspberry Pi OS Lite to a microSD card. Boot the Pi with a monitor and keyboard attached, and execute the commands: sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade -y sudo reboot wget -O - https://tinyurl.com/3mu6veem | sudo bash The above should be all that is required on a Raspberry Pi 4. But on a Raspberry Pi 3A or 3B, before the wget command, first execute: sudo rm -f /etc/systemd/network/99-default.link More videos on SBCs and wider computing and related topics can be found at http://www.youtube.com/explainingcomputers You may also like my ExplainingTheFuture channel at: http://www.youtube.com/explainingthefuture Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 00:46 Hardware 02:27 Installation 09:31 Configuration 15:43 Mapping 17:13 Wrap #OMV6 #RaspberryPi #OpenMediaVault #ExplainingComputers

This is the BEST video on youtube about this awesome topic (an openmediavault NAS with a RPi 4 with 8 gig ram, boot from the microSD, & a SATA 2.5 SSD) my $100,000 question is with a brand new SATA 2.5 SSD, Do you format the unused (not formatted) drive? with an RPi Linux doesn't already know what to do with the drive. When does this solid state drive have an assigned a file system to it? I would appreciate help with this, my project is NOT working and I keep returning brand new SSDs because I can't mount them in OpenMediaVault.

Can I follow your installation and apply it to an rpi5?
@azhoussem5889 Says:
1- so as far as i can tell redundancy isn't available ? 2- if i unplug a hard drive from the raspberry pi and put it on a windows machine will it work normally ?
@HKey_Root Says:
Am I pleased you retain these videos for posterity. Just needed to revisit this to resuscitate and existing NAS which hasn't been used for a good while. Thank you. Now I will attempt the latest Banana NAS.

I've set up OMV and it's working but I can't get my win10 PC to open the Network and Sharing options. If I click it nothing happens. I've tried it with the default Admin user too to no avail. Any ideas?
@brunosuperman Says:
Can i have it besides my full pi os? I would like to still use my raspberry pi 4 to do others things.

Worked like a charm, thank you so much for this excellent guide! OpenMediaVault is great, finally no more fiddling with mounting, Samba configurations or Windows access issues. Additional hint for those wanting to connect an existing NTFS formatted drive: 1) Make sure the drive label contains no blank space. 2) In the "Filesystem" configuration step, use OpenMediaVault's "Mount" instead of "Create" function. 3) In the "Shared Folders" step, set the relative path to "/".

Hi Chris, I built one of these and it worked perfectly with OMV5 with Linux and Windows laptops. I'm now using OMV6 which works with all the Windows laptops however none of the Linux machines can see the NAS. Could you do a video showing how to set up NFS?
@bobrae3350 Says:
A great video that has enabled me to set up a Pi5 as an OMV7 as a NAS drive for Windows PCs, but I'm frankly stumped when it comes to trying to access the Pi5 NAS drive from another Raspberry Pi. Can you do that using SMB/CIFS or do you have to use NFS - and, if so, how? The next time you do an OMV video it might be worth considering connecting to Linux and Windows systems. All the best, Bob.
@Martin4982 Says:
Hi Chris - I were trying the other day to install OMV on a Raspberry Pi, but I have a external hard drive, already full of content. I can only find videos or documentation of creating a new share on a empty formatted drive, but nowhere a guide/tutorial how to share a drive with content already on it. It would be wonderful if you can do another tutorial for RPI with OMV and add a tutorial to show how to share an existing drive with content, instead of formatting a new drive to share. Since this tutorial of yours is now 1 year old about, maybe an updated one will be great. Like your videos, informative, professional, as always!

Greetings to you! If you ever wondered whether your 'old' presentations had been revisited, you'll be happy to know that they definitely have! For several months, I've been tinkering with a Nextcloud installation on my Raspberry Pi 4 (in an Argon One V2 box, of course). It works, it's pretty, but there's always a little something that gets in the way. On reflection, I watched this video again and installed OMV 7. Everything's humming along beautifully, no problems at all, we're not talking about it any more! Thank you so much!
@DamonGaskin Says:
Mine has disconnected the net, during install every time(I tried for 2 days) at running script. Very frustrating as I really have tried and am still trying. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong..???
@hairoftehdog Says:
Install goes well, but when I try to access it from another browser, it keeps saying "Welcome to nginx, further configuration is required", and I can't go any further.

Great video... and easy to understand.
@jb31842 Says:
Prof. Chris, I'm trying to follow these instructions but my new Pi 4 has Raspberry Pi OS based on bookworm, and the script you linked to refuses to install on anything but buster and bullseye! Is there an updated script we should be using now?
@crazyhelmetbiker Says:
not even working, 12 hours ive been at this for now and ive done everything youve done and its literally not working, i could record everything to show you what ive done is correct and you will be shocked that it don't work, all this rasperry pi and omv are a load of shit
@johnrobertsmith9914 Says:
I finally got this to work and it's great! I can now back up all my data and also that data is available to any device connected to my local network (and that means multiple computers and phones by wifi too). However, it has been a bit of a struggle, which I would like to share, in the hope that this may help others. 1) Install Legacy Bullseye and NOT the current Bookworm version. I chose 64-bit Legacy LITE for a Raspberry Pi 4 (8GB). 2) Most annoying was that the script would stop with this error: "openmediavault package failed to install or in a bad state". 2a) I checked the SSD on Windows, and found the drive would not show at all. Not faulty, but need to be assigned a drive letter by using Disk Manager. I then formatted the drive. Transferred the SSD to a Linux machine and formatted again with ext4 file system. 2b) Instead of typing the tinyurl command, I instead typed the github command given in the acompanying documentation link. That did the trick. In the future I would like to explore a rsync incremental backup method. Bye for now, John Robert Smith.

Thx to that very helpful video. I was now able to get my NAS to work through the video. Although I had some difficulties when using Putty, the entry for the SSH connection was NOT integrated as a group at root. But I managed it. Now I wanted to ask if you could create a video of how I integrate an external HDD that already contains data in order to then access it in the system. I'm not coming back. My hard drive is constantly displayed to me, but I can ONLY access the free space on the HDD, but not the existing data. It would be very nice of you if a video like this could be made. Thanks in advance. And thank you for all the work and effort you put into your videos. I use a Raspberry PI4 8 GB and OVM6.
@myke49 Says:
Mine failed because "Only Debian 10 (Buster) and 11 (Bullseye) are supported". Exiting .....? Mike in Oz
@yoda6915 Says:
Just a FYI, just decided to upgrade, make sure you use BULLSEYE version of PI OS, as of this posting date and time BOOKWORM is NOT supported for OMV 6. I just tried and it said its not supported. Chris, your awsome as always, love your vids and tutorials.
@adityachopra7328 Says:
This is all jolly well good and all but can you clarify what exactly I am supposed to say when approaching a duck?
@aussierobbie5176 Says:
Hi everyone brilliant video just an update to anyone installing OMV6 if you find it will not install took me hours of looking but found the answer make sure when you look for what version of PIOS make sure its NOT the BOOKWORM version it has to be the BULLSEYE version there is no warning a problem will occur good luck everybody

Sir. I have been a fan for years. I truly enjoy your videos, as they are clear and explain the theory as well as the end goal in a way that is easy to comprehend and flow. To many you tubers spend to much time just filling the videos with fluff to run the clock out. Or spend endless hrs’ talking about how intelligent they are and never getting to the point of the project. I have made many of your projects, and enjoy them all. A few years ago I set up OMV on a Pi 4 via one of your tutorials. One thing I have always wanted to do was replace the USB drive with a RAID system. OMV will not let you RAID Usb drives. Put the new Pi 5 has that PCIe slot so I was thinking,, Hint Hint! Thanks and keep up the great work! Tony
@minigpracing3068 Says:
An update to this... OMV 6.9.x will not install on Bookworm yet. It errors out and tells you that you need to use Bullseye. Also, be aware that if you set your Pi up to use wifi, OMV might turn that off. I started via ssh on wifi, after installing OMV and reboot my Pi was no longer on the wifi. I had to connect a cable to get back in which wasnt really convenient for the work I was doing. Something people should consider when they start this process. Going to add Jellyfin after I get OMV set up.
@voidepi Says:
Absolutely amazing video for someone like me, who is very new to Linux! I used this video to set up OMV6 on my Raspberry Pi with great success! I've been just using it as a LAN server to share one HDD between a few different Windows 10 machines and it's been wonderful! However, I ran into a huge problem today! I logged into OMV and it mentioned I had 60-some updates to do. I thought it would be fine to go ahead and do those. Everything updated, got an error that through searching the web, I resolved by simply clearing my cookies. Now everything looks the exact same as how I had it set up before. NONE of my machines can access my shared folder anymore! None of my settings seem to have changed, I'm able to access my Pi via SSH and log into OMV through my browser, but I cannot get any of my machines to connect to my Pi or see my shared folder anymore. Did something perhaps change in the past few months that would necessitate me changing... settings?
@RobReddan Says:
I installed Rpi OS lite 32 bit, updated, upgraded, ran the omv install and it stops at [omvinstall] Unsupported version, Only Debian 10 (Buster) and 11 (Bullseye) are supported. Exiting... I went to OMV page and ran their installer command and got same message, so I take it Rpi OS is now running a new version that OMV doesn't support yet?

Once again, brilliant. Your clear, concise no frills tutorials are like a breath of fresh air. Thank you.
@jamesdinsmore9022 Says:
I attempted this in October 2023 and failed; my first issue was not using the legacy Buster W/O desktop (there are newer ones); then I got the message "unable to fetch some archives...failed to install openmediavault package." It did suggest trying "--fix-missing" but I am not sure how to use that with the command. I should probably try the longer route.

@Tasso170 Says:
Hi Chris great video.. would you be making any video showing two hard drives on with a raspberry pi, four on open media vault as a Raid?
@outofahat9363 Says:
4:18 other note: you want to install the 64bit version of the os if you plan on playing with docker containers (supported in gui by omv) in the future. most docker images are only available for armv8 64bit os (not just the kernel but also the rest of the os, use getconf LONG_BIT to make sure), thats why im currently reinstalling omv and going through a long backup process (just in case im not able to reconnect the shared folders)
@An.Individual Says:
Nice video as usual. I like my NAS to have 6TB of storage. I guess a PI is not the answer?

Hi Chris, How stable is running the OS and OMV from a micro SD card? Coud the SSD be partitioned to house the OS and OVM, or indeed have a USB flash drive run it all from?
@victor0845 Says:
Chris, you're a godsend. I watch other's videos for a "rough cut" at what I'm attempting, and then look your channel up. Your video-quality and narration set you apart. Clear and spare enunciation and that British wry humour serve to put the listener at ease. No squinting to read poorly chosen fonts or hand-draw diagrams in stomach-churning colours. Invariably you choose sane options for any software you're explaining or demonstrating thus saving me inadvertently making lunatic selection(s). God does not necessarily always protect fools and newbies! Keep the excellent work up and ignore those saying otherwise. Enjoy Summer 2023 knowing that your work is valued

In the Pi-Imager I created a ssh login, but when I try to login through ssh, he doesn't accept the password. I also tried the default password of the Pi, that doesn't work either. What can I do?
@ScottKBear Says:
In the year, plus since this video has been posted, I suspect something in this process has broken. Two years ago, I followed the previous (OMV5) video which worked flawlessly. I followed OMV6 video to the letter, except the beginning RP OS used in this vid, flashing a new SD card each time. Then swapped in Pi used in OMV5. Still failed exact same way, at least 6 times: "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) "failed to install openmediavault package." Then, I came across the RP OS image used in my OVM5 install (2021-05-07-raspios-buster-armhf-lite) started with that and THAT worked. However, instead of OMV6, OVM5 (5.6.26-1) was installed. The result was identical with both the two year old board and the two week old board. (Always swap parts, one at a time, when error trapping!) I could not locate an image for the RP OS you used (2022-04-04, my ideal staring point for replicating a successful install with OMV6) and my failed installs began with 2023-05-03-raspios-bullseye-armhf-lite image. I can only surmise that this newer OS version is what breaks the OMV installation process. ADD'L: Found 22-04-04. Ran thru process. Failed just as before.
@DucPham-rb7kv Says:
I had an issue installing the OMV package. I had to turn on the ssh first. Putting this here just in case someone runs into the same thing.

Hi Chris, I hope you are still following this. I am having serious difficulties in following this guide.
