He's not the "weakest and most pathetic character" in the series. He's actually extremely complex and important to the story. This game sucks but you clearly haven't read the series

Imo the premise isn't even that horrible. A game where you see firsthand how Smeagol went from a Hobbit into Gollum would be a decently good game if it wasn't overpriced. You start off right after Smeagol kills his friend for the ring and your objective is to keep the precious safe. Think a more scrappy Last of Us with only bows and melees. Slowly over the course of the game you lose more and more mechanics tied to actually being human and start acting more like a rat, getting more movement skills in exchange for your combat capabilities. In the end, you can't even fight anyone one-on-one instead relying on escaping or attacking them from behind.
Gollum's story is not very explored in the movies, I would like at least a small simple game experience to see how he decended into madness

Stealth done correctly is a lot of fun. This could have been a good game. Like,the Styx series or if the developers had really been fire it could have had Metal Gear vibes,but I'm disappointed it's bad. I'm glad I didn't buy it.
