Applewhite was brought into the cult by a woman who was a nurse at his psyche ward. He had a breakdown when he was playing a minister in an orchestra. This woman told him he was supposed to start Heavens Gate with her. They then changed their names to Ti and Do and The Two in the 70s and started recruiting. A lot of the members that died in the 90s were members since the 70s.
Applewhite met this lady already in a crazed state. Then she died and the group became much more like your standard cult under Dos watch. He came up with the suicide idea. He came up with the castration idea. Applewhite or Do was the name he liked and went by. The castration idea came from him being gay and he really hating this part of himself.
