Applewhite was brought into the cult by a woman who was a nurse at his psyche ward. He had a breakdown when he was playing a minister in an orchestra. This woman told him he was supposed to start Heavens Gate with her. They then changed their names to Ti and Do and The Two in the 70s and started recruiting. A lot of the members that died in the 90s were members since the 70s.
Applewhite met this lady already in a crazed state. Then she died and the group became much more like your standard cult under Dos watch. He came up with the suicide idea. He came up with the castration idea. Applewhite or Do was the name he liked and went by. The castration idea came from him being gay and he really hating this part of himself.

It seems like Applewhite was a bit different from the usual narcissistic, manipulative and abusive cult leaders. He was insane and looks like someone possessed by the devil, sure, but instead of purposefully deceiving his followers, it seemed like he was a naturally kind-hearted person (as shown by his life before all the occultism etc came in), who truly believed in his own teachings and ideas, and sought not to use his followers for personal gain, like wealth or sex. From what I've seen of their videos and other sources, it seemed like the members were genuinely nice people, and dangerous only to themselves, as we can see by their sad end. It is quite interesting that the two remaining members still keep the website online. They must be pretty old by now.

I was wondering if you ever heard a recording of Art Bell interviewing Marshall Applewhite. I never listened to the program as it aired so late. One night I was driving from a holiday party from Orange County to my home in San Diego. It was late and I tuned into Art Bell. I heard M.A. talking about Comet Hale-Bopp. I remember thinking he was a real nutter. It must have been November or December 1996. The following March I heard about the Heaven's Gate Cult.
