I understand the value of tradition and culture, however, this is an absolute waste of resources effort and time. And before anyone responds, let me point out the HYPOCRISY of flaunting all that "tradition".....and using an electrical hammer.

Japanese swords were so bad that they had to carry 2 to 3 swords on their waist because they break alot....

if a sword shatters can you start re-folding it right away or is it a tottal loss I wonder if there is a process to this?
@swakage13x Says:
Love how you forgot to include the part where the Smith stacks the tiles of the metal onto a piece that has been welded onto a rod wraps it up in rice paper burnt straw and clay slurry during the first heat after he has organized whether it's inner core or outer core of the blade
@michaelbalad4386 Says:
Ancjent Japanese Swordsmiths were also chemists.
@boredgamer7841 Says:
Glorious pig iron, folded 1000000000 times to make something that's half as decent as a European longsword.
@willek1335 Says:
The Katana is the Rolex of the sword world. Inflated for something that's adequate in quality..

Bro explained how a razor cuts hair using science. That's the reason i love this channel!
@zoltankaldy Says:
After the first few checks, I watched all Veritasium as it says "element of truth"; but at this episode changed it. It makes you think Japanese swords are the best, most expensive, and how good they are, and how original the making still today on this video. Does not says, but makes you think so, suggests you to think these swords are the very best. I watched another video (in response to this one), and it turned out it is not really the truth. So Veritasium is not the "element of truth" for me any longer, and I feel bad, as this is a great channel. I believed anything it had said, I was 100% sure I can trust it, and my trust ended by this video.
@dariuseversol Says:
isn't the slag useful for something too??
@SoullessScythe Says:

@daviddavids2884 Says:
most of the world calls iron sand magnetic black sand. some of us are wondering about a few things, derek. it was my understanding that putting clay on a blade results in only COSMETIC changes to a blade. and, the curving of the blade that occurs during quenching is a result of the slightly differing properties of the 'inner' and 'outer' steel. and, you fail to discuss HOW the softer steel 'gets INSIDE' the harder.
@leafs4626 Says:
Nice vid ! You can one about the making of high quality charcoal, which is equally important and fascinating as the forging process !
@johnnygolden7401 Says:
This single video made me a subscriber. The honor that Peter must have felt being invited to participate in this ancient process.
@Smitelight Says:
Whole crew of Japanese workers masked up to avoid breathing charcoal dust and crud from the furnace and one dumb American with his mask around his neck. Many such cases.
@alllove1754 Says:
I see an excellent thermite opportunity, substitute charcoal with aluminum powder ❤
@timg6176 Says:
Film it minus 2 of the most important steps. But I understand why those steps were left out. It is very important to maintain our own cultures.

iron sword? that means they rust..any detail on how samurai treat rust?
@LiborTinka Says:
15:36 I guess this "darker colored steel" is called "cast iron" - it has higher amount of carbon - there are many iron-carbon alloys with varying properties (Cementite is one such example)
@wb8ert Says:

Those black unmarked helicopters worry me in that it would take nothing for the deep dark state government to come in and take over the ranch, research, and the phenomenon. If they try to come in and take over, it wouldn't surprise me if all the people who love this show came to the ranch in protest.
